Same old Samsung

Evo also launched 3 months ahead of Epic- and Epic is getting 2.2 three months after Evo.

Once it's apples to apples comparison... and I highly doubt we'll get gingerbread 3 months AFTER Evo... so the issue is what again?

We've debated the issue plenty at launch. Should Samsung had delayed the Galaxy S line further to wait for Froyo? NO. Has HTC successfully launched a singular hardware line across as many carriers worldwide as Samsung? NO.

So maybe we should cut Samsung a little slack with the OS rollout until they truely don't deliver. Their PR isn't the best- but I think they've established they're in this for the long haul. They're not leaving the most successful single line of Android phones this year out in the cold on 2.3.

yea and too bad 3 months from august was last month, and im still running software on my epic 4g two generations old.....

So true... I think this is what is so frustrating... for this to be one of the "flagship" devices on Sprint along with the Evo, why are we SO far behind? This doesn't even have to be an "Evo vs Epic" argument... we are both under Sprint, and yet like carraser said, we are behind in the software department... come on Sprint, throw us a freakin bone here!

If you think Sprint treats Evo and Epic equally, you are mistaken. When was the last time you saw Sprint TV commercial showing Epic? All Sprint commercials that I see today are for Evo's.

This is due to the fact that Evo is Sprint exclusive, which means Sprint is the only carrier that gets the phone from HTC. In return, Sprint has agreed to promote Evo. On the other hand, Epic (aka Galaxy S) is not exclusive. Sprint doesn't have the contractual obligation to promote Epic.

Which is essentially very similar to how it is on Verizon. Any of the Android devices that are ‘Droid’ branded get MUCH more attention and advertising than the Fascinate does.

It all boils down to the carriers. If samsung didn't have to deal with carriers adding stuff we would already have 2.2.1 on all galaxy s phones. Samsung has already released froyo to sprint and we are waiting on sprint to do whatever they are going to do to the phone. So I would day that with two updates to fix bugs and froyo like almost here (again sprints fault not samsung's) I would say that samsung is doing what they said they would do. I would have loved froyo on my epic at launch but seeing that even stock froyo has had a number of upgrades I'd rather get the latest froyo software in one update.

if only carriers and manufacturers would stop baking so much crap into the os and allow that stuff to be optional and available on like a special market to keep things like touchwiz or blur exclusive then we would have timely updates and they would have very satisfied customers. Don't know why they haven't thougt of that yet. for instance I rarely use touchwiz and root and flash roms that are slimmed down. So give us options carriers and manufacturers. COME ON MAN!!!!!!

It's simple. By cooking, carriers can make more money. Have you heard that Fascinate (a galaxy S) has Bing instead of Google search? Verizon has multi million dollar deal with MSFT.

Google doesn't like what the evil carriers are doing but has no control. In fact, Google tried to change how consumers buy phone with introducing Nexus 1, but consumers didn't like direct shopping. I'd say an average consumer is happy with what carriers give them.

It's a sad truth that people like you and I are in the minority.

Just curious- how many updates is "enough"? So if we get gingerbread but not Honeycomb does Samsung still suck in your book even though they supported 2 OS updates in a 1year lifespan of a phone and have since released numerous upgraded phones?

Mind you- I wish EVERY phone was officially supported by the manufactures- but I can't expect them to when it's a major selling point. My car stereo I can flash new system OS to it...but Pioneer RARELY supports this feature- and instead rolls out new hardware requiring you to throw out the old...I'd PAY for an updated OS honestly to avoid the hardware waste- but often that isn't provided.

I expected Froyo and knew it'd be late (but I did hope by the holidays released) My bigger disappointment is the flat out BUGS in the Samsung OS that they should be held accountable for by Sprint and instead sprint just says - well you had a 30 day trial period... and act like it's ok to have a phone on the market that does not operate without unfixable problems- and then they void the warranty when you ROOT to install a FIX to the broken issues!

Forget the OS updates- give me a phone without major KNOWN bugs after being on the market for 3 months!

have we gotten an official upgrade yet i'm unaware of?

i think as long as the hardware can support it we should get the upgrade

In fact, Google tried to change how consumers buy phone with introducing Nexus 1, but consumers didn't like direct shopping.

Nexus 1 failed because it wasn't available for use on ALL carriers and it was rarely subsidized. If iphone was sold on ATT only for an off contract price NO WAY would it have sold as well as it has.

A phone is a very personal product choice- If I can't see and play with it before I buy, I probably won't. Tmobile exclusive and purchase online only pretty much guarantees few sales.

If I could have had a Nexus 1 at launch on Sprint or Verizon, I'd have bought one.

Nexus S exclusive on Tmobile AGAIN is strange. G2 is practically vanilla android as it is! Nexus S on all carriers within 3 months and announced like Galaxy S, would definitely help acceptance.

Samsung undecided about Gingerbread on Galaxy S

Samsung undecided about Gingerbread on Galaxy S, Google says hardware needs 'similar' to Froyo -- Engadget

I loved the Epic so much, that i decided to give Samsung one last shot. But they released the Epic with an already dated OS (which still isn't officially updated and is now 2 versions behind), and if they are already contemplating not updating their Galaxy S series to Gingerbread (an OS that came out mere months after their phones launched), then i have a serious problem with this. They've sold millions upon millions of these phones, and if they are seriously content with leaving them as is, then this reaffirms my prevailing thought that i should have gone with HTC (who immediately released Froyo on the Evo when available and has stated they're bringing Gingerbread ASAP).

I can only see if they came out and said that they were skipping Gingerbread to bring Honeycomb to Galaxy S, that would be fine.

But if things continue like this, i will be actively looking to sell my Epic or trade from an Evo and never buy Samsung again.

I Concure!!!

The problem is we as consumers are so brain washed 1st and foremost. 2nd different manufactors have different levels of support, and with that we can not compare....I guess its safe to say that at this point I will be converting BACK to a basic phone that allows for text and calls. If I need the internet I will use my laptop....No more rippingme off and in this CONSTANT change game they are in it to make money they dont make m oney on software updates why update to 2.3 when they can make the "Epic 2" with 2.3? ...ONLY use smart people who know about hardware KNOW it can have 2.3 but samsung will convience people to buy new hardware!!!!!.....DAH!...........How much do you want to bet GOOGLE isnt already working on "Android 5.0" and so on and so on.....its clear they are in it to make money and "each" relase is SOOOOO much better than the previous one...they try and convience you to buy it lol...a shame......

It is not Samsungs fault that people are idiots. It is the consumers fault if they are an idiot and don't research before they buy. If I was Samsung or any company I would absolutely capitalize on peoples idiocy. It's all about profits in a for profit company like Samsung.

I think this might be a bit of an extreme view. Don't get me wrong, absolutely are these companies out to make a profit -- that's the whole point of going into business. But at the same time you have to keep in mind that Samsung does realize that there ARE many people out there who bought their line of Android phones because of the specs they were touted with, and for those users it is still in their best interest to support the phones to some level.

What do you expect? It's a corporation! They exist to make money, not to make consumers happy. When consumer happiness and making $$$ line up it's nice, but they don't care about you or me. They care about their shareholders.

Having said that someone at Samsung should take notice that the early adopters are the ones who talk new hardware up to friends and family. Pissing them off isn't exactly smart.

I agree with the previous comments.......I'm just going to create my "own" cool .....I'm not going to be a slave to money or technology anymore......its a fast track not worth it.....they want us to ***** moan and gripe about not receiving something etc...if we slow down buying products so fequently they will be forced to put out better products and more quality WE are in control they need our money!!
