I have an almost 2-year old Turbo that's running on Verizon. It's battery has lost the capacity that it used to have when new.

If I purchase a brand new Turbo online, do I have to involve Verizon in getting the new phone up and running?

As long as the IMEI isn't blacklisted, you can take the SIM card from your existing Turbo and place it in the new one. (If it is blacklisted, then even involving Verizon will not help - they will not allow the phone on the network.)

How can a Droid Turbo be new? Verizon doesn't sell them as new anymore, and they are Verizon-exclusive.

A phone gets blacklisted when its owner fails to pay its bills. Occasionally people sell, or try to sell, used phones that are blacklisted.

Yes. Any phone that uses the nano-SIM that the Turbo uses will become your active phone when you put the SIM in and then start it. If there is a problem, just go to a Verizon store and ask them to activate a new SIM on your account.
