Samsung 8 having trouble recognizing and responding to flash drive

When I connect flash drive using the attached type c connector to Samsung 8, I do get a drop down menu with choices to transfer files or photos but the response when tapped is always- usb disconnected...then... usb connected... then nothing and I have to start all over again. Suggestions? The device works on my laptop but not my phone.

I can only guess that you mean S8 rather than Note 8. Moved there.

A flash drive isn't a computer - you need a Type C OTG adapter plugged into the phone, then plug the flash drive into that. Then you shoulkd get something dropping down on the screen, probably My Files in a Samsung phone.
