Samsung DEX on Windows laptop (it works!)

I tried watch a movie using theTubi app via DEX on my Windows laptop. There was only a dark screen but I can hear sound from the movie. That's too bad.

So it's other apps as well. What's up with that? I pay (for T-Mobile does haha) for Netflix and I can't watch it? I don't get it.

Works absolutely brilliant. Thanks to Casey for the heads up on this.

Yeah, you're welcome! A huuuuge reason why I like DEX to Windows is because I don't need to turn on my severely throttled down Mobile Hotspot function. I recently found out that I have an outdated Verizon plan whereby I'm immediately throttled to a crawl anytime I turn on my Mobile Hotspot function on my phone. That means if my Windows laptop (or any external device) is wirelessly tethered to my phone, that external device is only receiving a slow internet signal. But when I use DEX to Windows on my Windows laptop, my laptop receives the same fast 4G signal which means I can watch Youtube videos and Tubi movies without buffering or choppiness. This is a big deal for me. Plus I can use my phone apps mirrored to my laptop for usage. For example, I have a messaging app called WeChat that is only on my phone, not my laptop. But I can bring up the WeChat app onto my laptop via the DEX app and send/receive messages just like I'm on my phone...pretty cool.

By the way, for anyone who doesn't already know, internet connection to apps only works for apps installed on the phone and mirrored to the laptop via the DEX app. In other words, if you have a (Windows) app installed on the laptop only that requires internet connection, it won't work for logging onto the internet. As an example, I have the Chrome browser app installed both on my phone and laptop. If I open up Chrome via my phone/DEX app, this works with internet connection. But if I try to open the Chrome app on my laptop *outside* of the DEX environment, there is no internet connection. Hope this makes sense the way I described it.

I got it working on my MBP as well, but having trouble transferring files back and forth which is the main reason I wanted to use it.

For transferring files, it's easy. Don't use the DEX app. Just connect your Android phone to a Windows laptop via USB cable and a popup window should appear on your phone to allow for file transfer versus simply charging. Go to MyComputer or ThisPC and open the drive that corresponds to your phone, then do simple copy and paste Windows command from computer to phone or vice versa.

I use a MacBook Pro. MacOS is a pain at transferring stuff back and forth between it and Android phones. That's why I was so excited to have DeX.

I feel your pain. I can't stand Apple nor iTunes.

Technically iTunes doesn't exist anymore. It's all bundled into Apple Music now, and if you think iTunes is bad, the way they handle my library now is even worse. I can go back to using AirDroid. It works, just not very elegantly. I'm hoping either they update the DeX app or I can figure it out in time.

I consider iTunes to be a hugely bloated POS app for transferring music and images to an iPhone. That's Apple's way of holding you hostage to their ecosystem.

I like how any Android phone is recognized immediately as an external storage drive by any Windows computer. It's the same process as copying files from a computer to a USB stick. A Windows computer doesn't know the difference (nor cares) between a phone or USB stick.

I've been copying countless files from a Windows computer to Android phones for over a decade, it's so simple that any 3rd grader can figure it out.

I use both iOS and Android daily, and transferring files to an Android phone is the only one thing I prefer Windows over macOS, so I stick with macOS. I absolutely hate Windows for everything else, so I just deal with it.

Yup I can't stand it. Why do I need to go through an app when I should be able to just drag and drop.

this exactly. if they knew how many hate it for that reason

My frustration with iTunes began over 12 years ago. I used to have a hand me down Apple product, I think it was an iPod (dating myself, I know). I owned a large collection of music CDs which I purchased over the years. I literally spent many weekends burning CDs into MP3 files via a Roxio program and Windows computer. When I tried to transfer the music into iTunes and into my iPod, I got the dreaded "DRM" error message (Google this, tons of complaints about it). After many failed attempts, I gave up. I was utterly defeated by iTunes. Since then, I consider iTunes dead to me. I feel sorry for anyone that uses iTunes.

Even recently when I tried to help a friend transfer music into her iPhone 6 (cuz she's computer illiterate), again I was utterly frustrated. I downloaded the latest iTunes app into my Windows laptop, then transferred my MP3 music files into iTunes, but kept getting constant error messages trying to transfer the music from iTunes into her iPhone. I spent over an hour and got more angry with every failed attempt. I then gave up in disgust and deleted the offending app off my Windows laptop. To say that I detest iTunes is an understatement.

I like DEX. It's more useful than Link to Windows IMO. However, it is a little slow on my computer.
