I was reading that it can. However Im sure there is away to disable this from happening.

No it does not at all. From what I know which is 99% sure there is no magnet in the cover or phone that puts the screen to sleep or turns it off. In order to do that you have to use this new app that is in the works which you can find a few threads in the S3 section.
