I pressed the green phone button and it wouldn't work. The red cancel did....defect?

You'll have to press and then slide to the opposite side of the screen

Did you just press it, or did you long press and slide it over the direction the arrows were pointing/flashing?

You can't press it. You have to slide the icon to the right. I made the same mistake when I got my first call on mine, too, lol. I kept pressing, and nothing would happen.

That's a function of touchwiz you will quickly get used to. Swipe the green icon with one finger, and it will answer.

If you want to call someone on your recent calls list, slide your finger over the contact from left to right. If you want to text them, slide from right to left.

You wouldn't want just an press anyway...it would almost answer itself everytime when it rings in your pocket

My mom's friend who is 75 years old couldn't get the hang of 'swiping' so I set it up where she can answer using the home button.

The option to answer phone, silence alarms, etc with one tap is in accessibility. You don't have to swipe.
