Samsung Galaxy Note 4 no longer recognizes MP3 files

My Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has been playing MP3 files with no trouble since 2014. Now, regardless of the music player I use, it will not play these same MP3 files it has been playing for years. This error message displays, "Sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file."
Suggestions very appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! I moved this from the Android Apps forum to the Note 4 forum since the former is intended for developers to promote their apps.

Where are the mp3 files from -- did you rip them from a CD, or download them from somewhere on the web? Are the mp3 files saved to Internal Storage or the SD card?
