Samsung Galaxy S II phone, garbled voices

I've "inherited" a Galaxy II T989D from my daughter, email & browser work ok but on all incoming and outgoing calls there is continuous "alien-like" noise, and all voice rendition is garbled & distorted beyond recognition.

Google searches suggest I should set noise suppression but it's already set, and unsetting it has no effect.

Anyone know a solution?

The answer was to reseat the sim card.

The analysis, then, is that the card is going to go bad soon.
