Samsung Galaxy S-III and Sync Feature

Greetings!

I am new to this forum and to the Android O/S as well, having just purchased an Samsung Galaxy S-III yesterday. I've got a couple of questions and if I have not posted them in the correct place please forgive!

SYNCH: I use Gmail as my main email account and am using the App for same as it ships with the phone. I noticed today that there is virtually every contact from the 12,000 plus emails I have, and this includes addresses from Spam as well. (This is because I automatically have Gmail save contact information within emails I receive...this is going to change real quick).

As an example, if I go to Contacts --> Search and enter in "CON" it pulls up some 1,000+ entries. Much of it Spam.

I do not want all these Contacts. How can I disable Synch AND get rid of these contacts? If I need to reset this phone back to factory defaults, then so be it.

Going forward I intend to just open a browser and type in mail dot google dot com and retrieve my mail that way.

[II] GOOGLE PLAY: I may be in the entirely wrong Forum, period, for this but thought I would ask anyway. I have uploaded my music as taken from iTunes to Google Play. Is this publicly accessible?

For [II], the answer is no. Only you can see your music, and you can't see anyone else's. The record labels would be very unhappy if Google turned this into a modern version of Napster.

For , I'm not sure how to get rid of these, other than deleting them one by one. I had a similar, though much smaller, problem, and ended up deleting them manually. Hopefully, someone else will have a better idea.

Thank you very much! I should have used common sense and realized that the Music industry would not if fact be overly happy if Google became a file sharing service for music. So many thanks!

If worst comes to worse I can reset the phone to it's factory state; there are just too many to delete one at a time. Any idea how to turn Sync off?

If you want to stop a particular item from syncing, from any Home screen press the Menu button, select Settings, scroll down to Accounts and select Google, then in the next screen tap your Gmail account name. In the following screen you can enable/disable any individual item from syncing.
I guess you could disable syncing for Contacts (and email?), then just delete all of the contacts on the phone en masse. Then you'd have to do some major housekeeping up on the Google website. Once you got rid of all the crap, you could turn syncing back on and let it download your valid contacts. I use the Gmail app without any issues, but I don't have thousands of emails with tons of spam, so I'm not sure what your best recourse is to clean that up. It would be rather cumbersome to have to use the website to check your mail rather than the app - after all, that's kind of the point of smartphones.

Thank you very much for the highly detailed and concise reply! I purged all contacts within Gmail and then synced. This left only the phone book entries which is what I wanted. For those I need to email within Gmail will have their email address autofill from past emails.
