Samsung Galaxy S3 wont detect 3.5 Male to male audio jack

My phone can't seem to detect the 3.5 Male to Male audio jack that I have. However it can detect normal headphones, and my computer can detect the audio jack on either input. Is there a way to fix this?

What's on the other end of the M-M audio jack when you connect it to the phone?

My computer, my car, it doesn't work with either.

I have a similar problem. I can't get external speakers to work. Headset works, just not the male-male corded speaker.
