Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini - issue reviewing full text message

Hi

I am a new android user and am having difficulty receiving and sending full sms on my phone when they are sent with a mms. I would have through that if the message was too long it would roll over to a second message but that's not happening - I just can't read the full text message. This makes me think that maybe its just a display issue as I can physically type a full text with a photo but once I press send I can't see all the text that I have entered. Same with receiving. Is anyone able to assist?
