I started with the sticky and tried to root using Motochopper. This was unsuccessful and further searching seems to indicate its because of the specific version my phone is running.
Further searching for alternative rooting methods has turned up many windows-only approaches. I'm seeking guidance on linux based methods that are compatible with my version.
The reason I want to root in the first place is so I can use Cyanogenmod. As far as I know, in order to install Cyanogenmod I need to install CWM first, and to install CWM I need to have root access, which has lead me here. If these assumptions are wrong as there is an easier way to getting Cyanogenmod up and running without the hassle of rooting then please enlighten me.
