Lg kickstarted its 2017 with their flagship G6 giving us indication about how this year is all going to be all about that bezel less or less Bezel display , followed by Samsung galaxy s8/s8+.

DISPLAY.

This device is baller! Starting of you’re greeted with 5.8 inches (s8) / 6.2inches (s8+) super amoled quad HD panel. With curved edge display and almost no bezel on top and bottom. Screen being protected by corning gorilla glass 5. Samsung is obviously one heck of the display producers for the smartphone business. That Quad HD panel looks gorgeous considering the fact that they have been doing this for almost 2 years now, back when s6 was*announced. You*won’t find any sensors popping out of black panel on front side of the device unless you have other flavour then black.Talking more about screen it comes with 2:1 aspect ratio and HDR+ enabled screen to take advantage of. They obviously take advantage of their super amoled panel with their always on display which is pretty cool! Talking about some bezel which are on top and bottom of the device, on the top where you can find earpiece , ambient light sensors, retina scanner, and front facing 8mp PDAF selfie shooter.

CAMERA

Samsung have upped their game in selfie department with 8mp shooter with have now identify human faces, they have tweaked out some camera setting with controlling this contrast and brightness which is demanded by mass. They’ve added some gimmicky camera filters to get more attention. Having said that FFC looks promising in s8/s8+.

Now flipping the phone where you ll find 4tone LED flash alongside 12mp shooter inherited from its predecessor with 1.7 aperture, PDAF, 1.4 micron pixel size and 1/2.5″ sensor size. Resting alongside a active fingerprint scanner. Beneath the camera you find the Samsung branding and body covered by glass. Taking the same sensor from the previous generation have raised some eyebrows for sure. They have tweaked their software with multiple images being taken while shooting a single photo for less blur and detailed information. Though inheriting sensor from previous gen. still can compete neck to neck with likes of lg’s ane iPhone’s .

SPECS

Now let’s talk about beneath the hood of the device. It comes with 4gb of ram and 64gb of inbuilt storage with dedicated micro sd card slot for upto 256gb or a hybrid setup for the dual sim variant. All this is powered by Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 CPU Octa-core (4×2.35 GHz Kryo & 4×1.9 GHz Kryo) OR Exynos 8895 Octa -core (4×2.3 GHz & 4×1.7 GHz). Both the processors are made on 10nm*architecture.Games*and graphics will be powered by Adreno 540/Mali respectively for Qualcomm version and exynos. Looking at the spec sheet this device is beast but the heavy skinned version of Samsung on top of Android 7.0 is eating up more ram and 4gb of ram seems underwhelming because of the fact that they tend slow down and doesn’t age well.

BATTERY

All this is backed by the 3000mAh battery and 35000mAh on s8 & s8+ respectively. Battery being small Samsung is playing safe considering their debacle with note 7 and are avoiding cramming more battery in smaller build. Considering the snapdragon 835, 3000mAh is still not bad as the processor will be much more power efficient and the output is given by the super-amoled panel. Samsung have also included to modify the screen resolution setting for some battery gains. 3000mAh is still considered on par with other flagship devices, considering the fact that they ain’t having 10nm processors. Talking about the elder sibling s8+ , 3500 mAh is commendable.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

BIXBY! Well, when *you ask your google assistant “what do you think about Samsung artificial intelligence?” *No complains from me , artificial intelligence is only kind I have see says. Having said that bixby looks promising, and Samsung is pretty serious about their AL as they have *dedicated a button right below the volume rockers.

Google assistance and bixby are on the same page. Having used google assistance, expectations are high from bixby as well.

VERDICT

First impressions are mixes bag of emotion with superior design, form factor and processor they are all out on their competition. Lack of ram ( Not so underwhelming) , same camera sensor is surely not a step forward.

Just to clarify.

The S8 doesn't use the exact same sensor as its predecessors for its camera. It uses an upgraded version of both the IMX260 and S5K2L1, known as the IMX333 and S5K2L2 respectively.

I'm surprised more tech sites aren't picking up on this. I was a little curious as to why they didn't change the hardware at all, but then I think it was Android Authority that pointed out that the sensor had been updated. Even if it's not a huge difference in overall performance, they didn't use the same exact hardware as the S7 like was being stated pretty much universally by everyone on day one.

It's probably because the specs between the 2 pairs are almost completely identical.

That said, there probably is some minor differences in fabrication between the 2. Photo quality should theoretically have a subtle difference.
