Samsung galaxy tab s2 the control buttons on either side of the home button have stopped working. Any idea how to fix this issue?

Easy - bring it into a repair shop unless you've had experience repairing phones and tablets before. (Opening one without experience is asking for it to die. Lift the top and tear the cable off the motherboard and you turned an $8 DIY job into a $300 DIY job.)

This tablet is not easy to open as the LCD needed to heat up to remove from the frame.
However, you can use an app for Menu, Back and Home button

If all else fails (reboot) I would try a factory reset.
