have a galaxy avant and I've tried dam.near every app or method to wifi tether and it just doesn't work apn settings changed...rooted thru Odin....wifi tether app 3'.3 custom or something and nothing it went from turning on and connecting to.my devices but there was no data being passed and now after the apn change and such every time I go switch the hotspot on it force closes instantly... before all of this I called metro and tried having the hotspot plan added but they said they couldn't because it was a tmobile avant not a metro avant so now I have no choice but to try and make my hotspot work any help at all would be great thanks!

Since you don't have a hotspot plan, any data from a tethered device is dropped at the carrier's end. There's nothing you can do about it.

And if you want th phone to work properly, put back the proper APN - changing APNs only stops the phone from accessing the internet, it has nothing to do with ththering (except that a wrong one will prevent tethered devices from accessing the internet also, even if you have a hotspot account. The APN tells the phone how to access Metro's connection to the internet.)

Hello Ecko, welcome to the Forums at Android Central!

I agree with Rukbat.
Let us know how it goes.

Most people who use the hotspot either have the feature included in their data plan, or pay to add the hotspot. Carriers often block the ability to use "free wi-fi tethering" apps, because those apps essentially take revenue away from them.

Welcome to the forums. B. Diddy is right; if you want to tether, you have to pay for it, usually. I agree with the idea of: It's the consumer's data, they should be able to use it as they see fit, but big corporations don't see it that way.

That's right, and unfortunate too! :(

I had the same problem with cricket wireless because they don't have Hotspot plans but once I rooted it and added a custom rom it started working

Sadly US Cariers are greedy bums and they really should give tethering as part of a package, but they don't for the old unlimited users, its their way of trying to get you off the unlimited.
