Samsung Gear S2 GPS

I was wondering if the Gear S2's GPS would work without a data plan or if it would be required... I really don't care so much about having the ability to make and receive calls with the watch, but I do want to have the GPS feature like a garmin watch.

If you don't have the latest verizon plan with shared data and minutes, the watch would cost about $40 a month to be connected (on top of the $40 activation fee everyone is required to pay to activate it).
