Samsung Gear S3 frontier - No notification on watch when text message is received

The Text message is readable but there is no indication that a message was received. The notification from phone calls is working fine. I use Verizon.

I had an issue where the message notifications in the Gear app was disabled. I couldn't toggle it back on.

I had to uninstall the gear app from the phone and reinstall it to get the notifications back. It was a pain as it involved setting up the watch again.
