would you specifically need to vr gear controller to use for this, or would any bluetooth controller work???

You don't need the Samsung controller, but not every controller is compatible. I have the Moga Pro Power and love it, but there's other controllers as well.

i ended up getting this controller from amazon:


It works fine. the only issue is the A and B buttons as well as the Y and X buttons are inverted, and games i played on VR didnt seem to have an option to customize these. But... it was no biggie, i got used to it
