Samsung GS3 Volume Buttons and Notification Light Not Working

Hi,
My volume buttons and notification light have stopped working. The rep at the Verizon store said they can't fix it and I should try a factory reset. I am a little leery of doing that. Seems like a lot of pain for what I think is a hardware problem. Does a rest sound like it would fix these issues?
