Android Central Question

So my friend wanted to know how to move pics from the phone to the memory card. Simple operation right? So I show him and move a bunch of the pics to the memory card withing the Gallery App. I realized when I moved it, the pictures were still visible in the Gallery App folder that we were moving it from, so we assumed that the pics didn't move in the first place. So we moved it again to the album of interest on the SD Card. When we moved it, we got the "Hey, these pics already exist here, do you want to rename, replace or {some other choice]. He clicked overwrite - should be no harm, no foul. Now the pictures were not in the original gallery (Good), but they weren't in the folder on the SD Card neither (Not Good). We search all through the phone, no luck, - the pictures absolutely disappeared.

After some playing testing we figured out what happened. So let us rewind about 15 days or so. By my suggestion, a memory card was put in this phone for obvious reasons. I have no idea how it was setup but by the time I saw it, it was set up to save pictures directly to the memory card. What this means is that every picture that was taken for the last 15 days, were saved directly to the memory card. So the pictures that were showing in the gallery was a mixture of pics from the phones memory (Pre-SD Card) and the phones SD Card. The thing is that there was no indication that they were already on the SD Card.

So now to the issue at hand - When we tried to copy the pics from the SD Card to the same SD Card folder location, the phone gave us the warning to rename, replace or [some other choice], we chose to replace. Instead of replacing, the photo's got wiped from the phone. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to get these back or is it just a lost cause?

I checked the memory card on a PC and ran a chkdsk. Everything seems to checkout okay. Thanks

Welcome to Android Central! Have you used a file manager app like My Files or Total Commander to explore the actual directories on the phone and the SD card? (If you're using My Files, make sure you're using the "Explore" option, and not just look at the Photos category -- the latter probably doesn't display photos based on what directory they're in.

Also, try unmounting the SD card (in Settings>Storage) and inserting it in your PC, and use Windows Explorer to search around.

In the future, when rearranging files, I strongly recommend using a file manager app, not the Gallery app. And never use the Move command, because if something goes wrong with the file operation, you've also lost the source file. If you use Copy, you'll still have the source file.
