Samsung Messages picture downloads

I have a S21. I am using Samsung's Message app for my texting. When a picture is texted to me I have to tap on the thumbnail in order for the picture to download to my phone. Is there any way to have the images download automatically upon opening the text? I find it annoying to have to do this every time.

I was using Verizon Message+ before (when I was on Verizon) and they automatically opened. Unfortunately I can no longer use the Verizon Message+ because I can no longer install it on my tablet (although it does work on my phone) and I need to use the same app on both phone and tablet to sync messages across my devices.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Isn't there an option to automatically download media in the settings of the Samsung messages app?

Open messages, go to settings by tapping the 3 dots. Open more settings, multimedia and toggle on auto retrieve and auto retrieve roaming.

Thanks. I hope that works. the first setting, Auto Retrieve was already turned on. I did however turn on the other one, Auto Retrieve while roaming. I'll see what happens.

Try resetting the app by long pressing it then tap info >go to storage>clear data then force stop it
