Samsung Note 8 Dimming Screen Issue

My Samsung Note 8 dims to the lowest setting whenever I unlock the screen. The "Appear on top" screen then displays. I can adjust the brightness, which stays fine while I'm using the phone, but if I leave it or hit the power button to lock it, it does the dimming thing every time. This started 3 days ago. I cleared the cache, rebooted and still the issue persists. I'd be grateful for any assistance.
