It's not a big deal, but why is it one day on the first page near the top, but another day I have to scroll down several pages?

Are you talking about a thread you started getting pushed down as other threads are updated? FYI - the thread with the most recent update is displayed first by default (underneath any sticky threads). But you can also sort by replies and views.
To keep up-to-date on any important threads, I would suggest you subscribe to them!
