samsung tab 2 10.1 not connecting via usb or Kies

Hi, I am new to android and have a tab 2 10.1. It will not connect to my vista windows PC via USB an error message states 'Hardware ID Missing' 'windows cannot identify the device plugged into the Samsung Mobile USB composite device. For assistance, contact the hardware manufacturer.'
Then upon installing Kies it simply searches for the device for about 20 mins and then cannot find it. I have search many forums and no definitive answer is given. Can anybody help????? Thanks
