Samsung Tablet 10.1 not charging when on. What could be causing this?

samsung tablet 10.1 not charging when on.

when i try to charge my tablet it has a red cross on the battery, right now i can only charge it when it is turned off. i have only ever used the original charger. what could be causing this?

I suspect the battery is failing

with the "upgrade" to 4.2.2, this red x is now a new feature. nothing wrong except the programming.
