Every time I see a thread posted and people are asking questions like why is my cpu using so much battery? Or How do I get 4 million hours out of my battery? I always sit and read the responses and end up face-palming so hard Ive been asked if Im abused by my imitation girlfriend.

99% of the time the most suggested thing is installing a app or five apps, that will limit how often your phone connects to 3G/wifi. Ok cool I use a app to limit how much 3G/WIFI is used, but that is all. No other apps at all. All the app I use does is turn off wifi and or 3g while the phone is not being actively used. Once you wake the phone it will turn on which ever radio you need.

I see threads tho where people are using apps that completely shut off the phones ability to access the mobile internet. Why? Most of these apps are available for free but the free version is limited to the point you need to spend 4 bucks on the full/pro version (Looking at you Juice Defender).

So lets say you spend 10 bucks on two apps then you spend four or five hours getting them setup. That is not a unrealistic time frame either. Ok I rate my time at 16$ hour and that is cheap compared to some people. So lets see five hours is eighty bucks plus 10 bucks in apps. You spent 90 bucks making your phone dumb just to get 10 more minutes of battery.

Now lets say you spent that money on a battery or two. Matter of fact you can buy about 8 batteries for 90 bucks. But you really only need two maybe three batteries, so you spend 30 bucks on two batteries (you went ahead and bought two OEM from a reputable buyer on amazon). I can get 18-26 hours out of a full charge with moderate use. That is with the free version of the battery saver app I use. I am a cheap arse so I use as much free stuff as I can. If I had two backup batteries I could go almost four days without having to worry about charging a battery. But in reality if you need backup batteries you would prolly get about 40 hours out of them all which isnt bad.

The biggest drawbacks to using airplane mode is you no longer have a phone just a expensive pocket warmer. Yes it is easy to turn airplane off but unless your on a airplane why do you need airplane mode? It was put on phone so people didnt have to turn phone on and off so much. Mainly as a convenience factor. I think if it was meant as battery saver mode they would have called it battery saver mode.

The point of this is people stop telling each other to use airplane mode or multiple apps to get better battery. Use your phone as a smart phone not a dumb phone. Most of us bought the phone to use it and not have to enable or disable apps each time we want to use it as it was designed for.

TL;DR? stop telling people to use airplane mode or multiple apps to get more battery. Just go buy a battery and use your phone like it was intended to be used.

Or as cheaper alternative you can just toggle your settings yourself. That's what I do. I feel it gives me more control over my device, and I always know what is on and what is off. Running one of the cm7 roms, you can do it with the notification drop down, or Quick Settings works great on froyo.

Yeah Eollie! Your totally right. Im totally with you. Fact of the matter is, in a place with good service, your battery will last well over 24 hrs in standby. I live in an area with poor service so I just accepted that my battery is gonna drain, and when I'm in a place with zero service... I turn airplane mode on;) no other timers.

That said, I think alot of the battery saving is all fun and games for all these guys. Its a challenge to see how long they can go without recharging. :p

I use nothing, I have tried them all, and with IHO my best results are with using nothing. Green power worked great with froyo, but uses more battery than it saves on gb. I have juice from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed, so Im happy with my battery life.

i use juicedefender and setcpu profiles in combination with each other works great for my needs I always keep things way underclocked when the screen is off.

Harmonia 2 rom + basic Juice Defender makes my phone last 50% longer. It used to last about 24 hours of light use, now 36 hours of light use is no prob. And it was free, better than buying a new battery and carrying around the extra weight.

The only problem is with Pandora and Juice Defender, cant have them running at the same time, so i just click JD off for a while.

rant much? kidding but yeah I agree dont worry about battery life on a smartphone, just buy more batteries.

I get using juicedefender and setcpu to a degree. But mostly your using apps that use battery to extend the amount of time your battery gets. /boogle.

Very true juicedefender free version is nice but like you mention it has issues with pandora. You are on the right track tho. I know most people dont carry a bag or briefcase with them daily so keeping a spare battery can be troublesome. But if you are able to keep a battery there is no reason to be using multiple apps to get more life. Just use the phone like it was intended. For the most part I am near some sort of charger every day, either my computer or vehicle. So its not that big of a deal. As a suggestion try Green Power its similar to juicedefender only very simple and no customization needed unless you dont want the icon in your notification area. Ive been using it for month now and absolutely love it. The couple times Ive had trouble was bad data restored after a flash.

Yes this was a rant. I try my hardest to steer people in the right direction only to have somebody suggest airplane mode or a firewall app or some other app that uses battery to limit your phone battery usage. Most batteries can last longer than what is published but anything more than twice the published time is honestly limiting your phone. Just understand how a smartphone works and dont try to compare it to a itouch/ipod or other pda, because those devices dont have the radios a smartphone has and will always have better battery for that reason.

The free version of Juice Defender, combined with the smartassv2 governor gives me 2 days per charge. Good enough for me.

I am running backside. The only thing I do is turn of wifi when I'm not using it. I guess my battery life could be better but I am happy with it. It lasts from 530am when I get up for work till I get home around 5pm. And usually has between 30 and 50 percent left.
