Internet works as fast as it did on a blackberry I had with verizon. But why am I getting 3G in a standard network area. Is sprint testing 3G in all its main coverage areas now that 4G is kickin' it?

ive noticed in places that many times i'd switch down to 1x, i've been getting a reliable 3G connection.

ive actually never seen the phone ever go into 1x.

weird. and good i guess.

Well I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't just seeing things. Because I'm in bumF*** iowa and there shouldn't be a signal here, at least there wasn't with my pre. But hey! I'm not complaining!

Are you coming from a blackberry by any chance?

I don't think the Evo has a 1x icon. Mine shows 3G as well but when I surf the web its still slow

I am not in a 3G area and I am seeing 3G as well (and I know there's no recent towers or whatever, since my friend works in Sprint and I asked him about this 3G icon thing). On the manual, it does say there's supposed to be an 1x icon. The weird part is that I downloaded the speed test app and it's reporting speeds that don't belong to either 1x or EVDO, I get something like 200ish down and 250ish up (upload is always faster for some reason), I wonder if the speed test app wasn't calibrated for the Evo or something, cause websites don't seem to load any faster than before.

Are you sure the 3G icon is lit up? If you are on 1xRTT area, the 3G icon will be a dull greyish color, while when you are in an active 3G area, the 3G icon will be bright white.

I don't think the phone ever says 1x on it like the Pre did.

Of course, I may be 100% wrong about this. Just speculation from what I have experienced.

Yes, the 3G icon is lit up. In fact, it even shows the up and down arrows whenever I am using data.

try speakeasy speedtest , it seems to be the most accurate

I have an EVO in a non 3g area. It does show that it is 3g while sitting beside a Hero which is showing 1x. I am thinking that the 1x icon is missing. It is not getting 3g that is for sure, not sure why its showing it.

Mine is roaming now.. it shows a triangle.

But anyways, I also live in a non-3G area.. yet the phone shows 3G. I don't think the phone has a 1x icon. If it did, i'm pretty sure I would've seen it a long time ago.

The manual states theres a 1x icon... So it should be there... I don't see why it wouldn't kick in to be honest.

Just pulled the attached off my Evo. They are there, and where they are supposed to be.

Could be an error in programming somewhere that makes phone think it's connected at evdo when it's really not.

If you're getting 1x speed and seeing 3G icon, it's a display bug. If you're getting 3G speed in a Sprint 1x area, you could be connected to Alltell towers under the roaming agreement because of a bad PRL.

My rep in Tampa says they are expanding 3G as well. I am getting 2down in Tampa. It seems speeds are increasing.

i can confirm as im in a verizon 1x area and downloads are slow. when android was updated with HTC sense, they only had 3g and 4g. technically 1xrtt was labeled 3g at one time but truly its not.

1x is labeled 3g with 3g itself
4g is 4g
there is no 1x and i say that in a basement of the library at the university
