scared to root

If you're going to root, I would do it soon. The next OTA will likely make rooting even more difficult then it is now.

If you can follow directions closely, then you shouldn't have a problem. There are two very good guides written already for windows users. Take it one step at a time, and pay close attention to what you're doing.

Once you're rooted, then you have to decide if you just want to remove the bloat, or venture off into the flashing world. Cyber Warrior has an excellent guide to get you started on flashing/ backing up roms and kernels. The whole process can be a little overwhelming at times but it's worth it.

It's not that difficult you just have to read alot and follow directions. Where it becomes dangerous or confusing is when you do something you are not sure of, or get your files mixed up somewhere, and end up with issues you are not yet prepared to deal with. Once you've rooted and learned the basics of recovery/rom managing, backups, and hboot, you understand that it would be difficult to actually break your phone. But until you've learned a few things you will be sort of lost if you get in hot water.

So you have to read and ask questions! But read and search the forums for answers first. People here are very helpful.

My only issue

And voiding the warranty

Rooting is not as easy as it may look but if you do it step by step and are patient you really can't go wrong. I got my TBolt on Wednesday afternoon - my first Android Phone and I was rooted by 10 PM that night.

If you are a mac user, Cory's guide is very thorough. I had only rooted with unrevoked previously, but his guide was very simple for me to follow.
And cyber warrior's rom manager and flashing guide should be very helpful if you want to learn how to go about that stuff, and basically you have to at least learn rom manager and recovery mode plus hboot, in case u have problems somewhere along the line or if you ever need to unroot and go back to stock settings.

I'm in the same situation (first Android and nervous).

My biggest concerns are the steps to take prior to, and after, rooting (i.e. settings, anti-virus, backup, etc).

No reason to right now. Update its imminent. No more than 2 weeks off. Also I'll sir right for a one click that doesn't wipe (if that ever comes). If not I don't think it's worth the trouble on this device. Especially with htc regular updates.

This was my first android and I had it rooted in less than 24 hours. I had no fear. The force was with me.

I would like to root my HTC Thunderbolt but I'm scared I will mess it up because this is my first Android

The update might make the current root method stop working, and it was difficult for those guys to get root access to begin with.

You should absolutely root, you can "always" go back to stock by flashing a RUU. There is a step by step video that shows you how to do it, hardest part is getting ADB installed, by they give you all the links. I had the video on 1 monitor, and ADB going on the other, and I just watched the video do a few steps, paused, then repeated myself, it was a piece of cake, copy, paste, copy paste, reboot, copy, paste.....

or you can use my auto root, or you can ask me or upstreammiami to root your phone for you
