It's the nature of LCD's. They have a polarizing filter, whereas AMOLED doesn't (that I know of). So if the polarization of the LCD is perpendicular to your glasses, it'll knock out almost all of the display light. It depends on both the glasses and the specific screens. I've had one phone black out in landscape and another in portrait with the same glasses.
I've actually moved away from polarized sunglasses for general use, so it's not even a problem for me anymore. Just kinda hard to find non-polarized glasses these days.
