Just got my HTC one a couple days ago, and was curious if a anti glare screen protector would help me with reading my phone outdoors. I work outdooors(roofing), and I am not used to using this phone in bright light. I thought I had the setting all the way low today, but that wasn't the case as it was on its highest setting. Mind you I am coming from a Blackberry 9930, so this phone is a totally different animal. Are all phones like these hard to read in bright sunlight?

Actually the one is better than most in the sun! No phone is readable in direct sunlight!

Hmm.. I have used so many smartphones and tablets and I can definitely say that the HTC One is the best when it comes to seeing the screen under direct sunlight. Are you sure there's nothing wrong with your settings or screen?

I'm using a ghost armor screen protector and it's not anti glare. It still looks as good in the sun.

I have the auto brightness setting on and I'm not running into any issues regarding bright sunlight.

I actually did have the auto brightness setting on, and had to take that off as it was way too dark to read anything. I did bring the phone into Sprint to have the guy look at it just to make sure nothing was wrong, and they did not find anything. I will try a protective cover, as I was going to get one anyways.

Who knows maybe it is the initial shock since moving from my 9930?

Lol, maybe. I have an anti-glare and anti-finger print screen protector installed but I was able to see the screen just fine under sunlight even with the clear screen protector I had installed beforehand.

I feel the same way. I came from a Blackberry 9810 and I was able to see the screen so much better in direct sunlight. While the One may be the best out of the Android phones, compared to the Galaxy or such, it is nothing compared to Blackberries. I have my brightness set on auto and it's very difficult to see in direct sunlight. Indoors, it's totally different and the screen is way better than my old BB.

As other said, under direct sunlight all modern phones struggle to get readable. The One is pretty good at it, but nowhere near where all the screens should be. Try turning off auto brightness and set it to it's highest and see if that helps.

Auto brightness is another feature that any OEM on any platform can get right. I've had LG Optimus 7, HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 and now the HTC One and all of them throttle it too much. I always ended turning it off and set it between 30% or 40% on all of them. That makes the screen comfortable to read (and save battery) on most usage scenarios for me.

Sometimes I wonder why full brightness is still hard to see outdoors, and then I remembered to turn of power saver. Big difference :-D
