Screen Going Dark ONLY During a Call

LG Rebel 4 LTE, with Oreo (8.1.0) Model LML212VL

A question that is close, by AC, answered by itguyjax8430, is not apropoś to my situation, i.e. proximity sensor, as distance makes no difference.

kway_NY posted a workaround, but I can't believe another app is needed for reasons below.

THE PROBLEM:
My screen goes dark after several seconds,
(general setting at 2 min.)
ONLY once a call is initiated,
(the dial pad itself stays up the 2 min)
but comes back up if I shake the phone,
(Auto rotate is OFF)
and stays lit as long as I'm still working something, but goes dark again if more than 3 or 4 seconds goes by after the last action.
No other area does this. In addition all other areas go dim first before shutting down, while the call area simply goes dark with no warning.

This phone has been this way since new, yet my wife has this identical phone (bought 2 at same time, + hers has been replaced once) but hers does not do this. Which leads me to think I changed some setting(s) that she did not. However, I cannot find any place in Settings that addresses this area alone.

Any help appreciated much.

Thanks,

B Diddy,
Same on speaker. Haven't tried safe mode. I'll do that soonest n let u kno...

methodman89,
I've never seen "Knock on" in settings, nor "Raise to Wake, but I'll check.

Thanks guys.

B Diddy,
Still same in SAFE MODE.
A small correction: I was wrong about the screen not going dim first: it does. And the shutdown time is more like the 4 or 5 seconds in dim, then 20 seconds to dark.
(a side note: the instructions at Hardreset on how to access safe mode are partly wrong. You hold the Power Off button, ok, but at the 2nd box, confirmation, it says "Tap Power Off" when actually you need to HOLD there to get the safe mode choice. A Very big difference if you don't know better. In addition, for turning SM off, there is Also a notice that appears in the status bar: roll down menu, from Android System saying safe mode is on, with the choice to tap here to shut it off.)

methodman89,
Knock On is set at 2 taps to turn on.
There is no Raise to Wake.
(a side note: in Settings search, Caps Count!)

Hope you'all have something further on this then.. Waiting with baited breath,

Check your phone app , in its setting to turn off proximity sensor? Also make sure you not using any power saving mode . Last but least clear data, cache and force stop the phone app by long press the phone icon tap info scroll to storage and clear data/cache and don't forget force stop

B Diddy,
Discovered wife's new phone doing same thing!
Add in case: this is both in and out calls.

The android version is same, also kernel, & build #, but software is: mine L212VL16e, while hers is 10a, and patch is: mine Feb 1, 2020, while hers is 2018. As to the patch: these phones are both on a family plan, Totalwireless from WallyWorld, which means Totally Google!, and hers does not get the bi-monthly updates mine does ( they are "mining" my phone for info. The updates are an excuse).

But considering my first line discovery, I guess that doesn't mater.

For Everyone else involved:
I checked for all power/battery saving, and the Only one on is "Power Saving mode," which on or off makes no difference, and "Comfort view" the same. Battery saver Extended is off. Even data saver is off. I reset time out to 5 min, no difference. Screen saver plus auto start when docked or charging, is on..set for clock to show, but I can't see any connection as this problem goes on whether these phones are charging or not.

I'm quite positive I set some proximity distances when phone was new, but damxed if I can find where now. Under settings, even show system, phone does not show as an app, only under app permissions where there is no proximity. Under Settings, Accessibility, motor and cognition nothing is turned on. Can't find proximity settings, but in search the word comes up to deal with GPS only.

I've been at this for hours now, beginning to think it's not worth it. I may yet try deleting phone's data if you, or someone, can tell me where to find it as an app.. it is a built-in but not in system apps.

Thanks to all

Hi, to clear phone app data long press the phone app icon tap info then scroll to Data/cache and clear back out one and force stop .

This might just be how LG's in-call interface works -- maybe they do this to reduce the risk of accidental button presses, even if you're using speakerphone. It'd be helpful to get input from other LG users to see if the same thing happens. Maybe @Mooncatt can weigh in?

I can say that this doesn't happen on my Pixel 3 XL.

Well I found where I had proximity sensor. An update switched my keyboard back to LG's, and changing back to Swipe found it there. No difference to dial pad prob.
As to it being simply LG: wife's identical 1st phone didn't do this, but now the replacement, two weeks old ( yet still 2018 model) has same early dimming.
I've tried everything short of deleting the apps data (and getting quite sick of fixing wallpaper, moved icons, bringing back out disappeared buttons....apparently LG/Qualcomm Snapdragon buffers aren't equal to the job...every time I shut down/reset this phone). I may try that..kind of afraid to..and I'll let you'all know if I do, but I'm going to settle for shaking the phone to relight the dial pad for now.
One last thing then: I waited while dial pad was up, and it did the full two minutes, only starting the dimming too soon thing after a call is initiated.

Thanks for all your help and interest
