Screen going off when dialing

Hi. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or can guide me to the right thread or solution. I bought a VM Optimus V for my daughter (I have the same phone). After two weeks of use suddenly the screen started going black when dialing an outgoing call. The call goes through but there is no recovery of the screen functions with any of the buttons no matter how long you hold them down. The only solution is a battery pull. Removing apps or factory reset did not solve this. Also, incoming calls, emails and SMS work fine.

Now here's the weird part. I called VM and they sent me a new phone. We activated it last night and it did the exact same thing! There were no apps added but my daughter had put in and synced her gmail account. I then added the Advanced Task Cleaner Pro which showed the normal tasks but also something called "service programu" which also showed on her old phone but does not appear on my phone. I am not sure this is related or not.

I called VM again and they are sending me yet another Optimus V. Does anyone else have this issue and know a solution? I have spent hours on this and I am getting quite tired of it.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you didn't cover the sensor to the left of the earpiece and virgin logo above the screen with a case or screen guard or graphics or anything. You cannot see this sensor, but it is there

My wife had this same problem with her graphics stickers.

Sounds like faulty proximity sensors, although I suppose it's possible you're holding both phones in the same way and covering it. As raiser1 pointed out, there's a proximity sensor under the glass that's there to detect when your face is against the phone and disable the display.

If you cover it with your hand (or probably anything else) it will turn the display off. Maybe she put a case on both phones?

Thank you to both for your quite accurate solution of the problem. I wish that I had seen the problem (that my daughter put on the "skin") as soon as the phone arrived or that the VM technical staff had a clue. The skin actually has a perforated region that we forgot to peel off. That solved the problem.

Thanks once again!
