So, this issue, isn't actually an issue. But!! It's something that happened to me occasionally, and I totally kept thinking it was an issue with the phone, or some glitch, and it was making me HATE my phone. After having the phone for a month, it finally dawned on me what it was....

The issue...occasionally, I would pick up my phone, turn on the screen to unlock it, and within a second it would shut back off....sometimes this would last a few times, other times it would take me forever to get the phone unlocked, other times I would actually take the battery out cause it was locking me out for like 2 min and I was just plain frustrated.

Well folks, I'm here to tell you the solution in case any of you here (or anyone on the great and spacious internet) have run into this same issue.....TAKE YOUR DAMN THUMB OFF THE PROXIMITY SENSOR AT THE TOP :) Yup....I know....Now you feel stupid too huh?

I have the tendency to hold my phone from the top of the screen, which puts my thumb over the sensors at the top. When you do that, it makes the phone think it's in your pocket, so it automatically shuts the screen back off so you don't pocket dial/purchase/facebook....whatever.

You're welcome and have a great day.

Good tip, thanks! Is there a system setting where you can turn that feature off?

I'm not sure if there is, I'm sure someone will chime in if they know of it. I know on my S4, it had a "pocket mode" feature for exactly that. But I haven't found anything on the G3 as of yet. I'll look around. I have a case on my phone, so I never have to worry about that, except for maybe if my leg makes the phone sense a double tap on the screen.

I've just gotten used to holding my phone differently so I don't cover the sensor.

The odd thing to me is that the proximity sensor is usually activated during calls. There wouldn't be a great reason to have it on otherwise, unless it was some pocket feature, because as you mentioned, it would just blank the screen at inopportune times just by accidentally putting your finger in the wrong place.

Yea they've done this because of the knock feature. Help keep your phone off if accidentally turned on

What ffejjj said.

Also, the phone doesn't turn the screen off while it's already on, only when in a call and if it's off. Seems like it works pretty well, both for phone calls and pocket storage.

Good Morning,

I actually broke my screen a while back and had it repaired. However dust is now in my front facing camera and the screen just keeps turning off. Oh how many times I have almost thrown my phone clear across the room due to this. Now Idk where that sensor is, but my thumb is usually on the middle of the screen or on the sides. Still keeps turning off. I have to practically race the darn thing just to get my password in. Any ideas? :'(

Sincerely,

Zack

If you are rooted and have Xposed, there is a module called "Disable Proximity Sensor".
This helps with saving battery but has a drawback because when on a call the screen will not shut off.
Causing accidental face presses against all settings.

Haha I had this problem and did a factory reset thinking it was a lollipop bug, but only to find my rubbish screen protector peeling off at the top being the cause (thanks to your solution). So angry and relieved at the same time

Omg wow i love yoooouuuu!!!!i had that problem too about a month after i got it and i was nervous and sad....I LOVE YOU!!!thank u!

I've had this problem for about 6 months now, except I don't have any parts of me blocking the top. I even tested it out, blocking the sensor (when I wasn't having the problem) and it turned on fine. It seems to happen, regardless if what I do. Sometimes it's even flat down in a table. Doesn't happen every time, but VERY often.

I am having the same problem with mine after replacing the screen, did you ever get it figured out?

My LG G3 had the permanent blackout screen during phone calls and repeated cyclical black screen when turning phone on. I tried resetting to factory with no luck. So finally I cleaned out the proximity sensor and that was the solution! Now the phone is working normally again. I suspect that dust build up over 2 years messed up the proximity sensor. The fix is easy;
- remove back cover
- remove the 9 small screws securing the top 2/3 of the black plastic protective cover
- gently pull off the black protective cover
- gently pull back the proximity sensor at the top with tweezers or micro screwdriver( be careful to not damage the attached ribbon cable) the small sensor is square and will easily pull out of the housing space
- use compressed air to clean out the sensor housing ( I also took a damp Qtip to also clean out the space )
- reinsert the proximity sensor and reassemble the phone.
It only took me a few minutes to do it and I almost bought a new phone because I couldn't find this solution anywhere on the web. Good luck
