Am I missing something? Did Nouget take away the ability to make the phone screen black out when holding it to your ear?

I don't think so, but there seems to be a glitch preventing the screen from turning off when the on call screen is on.
Someone said that glitch went away for them after a factory reset.

Just press the home button when in a call, then press power button. Screen turns off.

Yes, that was me who said the glitch went away :-). I first did the other workaround pressing the home button then power to turn it off but I didn't want to do that for the next year! Less frustrating for ME in the long run to go ahead with the factory restore. Plus, I like keeping the process fresh in my mind. Haven't looked at the phone when on a call to see if it goes black when by the ear.

So it's only when the phone has the phone app up. If your return to the home screen this problem goes away. Not sure why but it works

I had to maker a speakerphone call and the phone went black if I didn't move my hand or touch my screen. Once I moved my hand while holding the phone, the screen went on.

Just press the home button and then turn the screen off and you are good to go. Never turns back on
