Does anyone know what app might be causing my screen to turn on for about 3 seconds then turns off? It does this all hours of the day and I can't pinpoint which app might be doing this...if its an app? Anyone else have this problem now or in the past? If so please let me know how you fixed this problem. Thanks.

If the screen shows some sort of clock with missed messages/calls, but looks different from the lock screen, it's a feature called quick glance which can be disabled from the setting/motion menu.

Otherwise, you may wanna try an app like wakelock detector which should tell you which apps keep waking up your screen.

I'll give wakelocker a try. I don't have quick glance in my motion menu. I am on a Galaxy SIII, maybe that is an SIV feature?

Quick glance is a note2/s3 4.1.2 feature. But if you have a carrier model, it may not have it.

Quick glance certainly isn't a feature on the Verizon phone.

I don't remember coming across any posts about that problem.

Since you haven't taken any guesses about any 3rd party launchers, live wallpapers, lock screens or security apps, I'll vote for a Factory Reset. Then, don't install anything until you're confident that the problem no longer exists, at which point you know it isn't your hardware.

I am dreading a factory reset as I don't want to have to reload everything. Probably my biggest fear moving to android from ios. ios was so easy to backup/restore. Is there an all in one android app that is somewhat close to ios backup/restore?

Do you know how to tell which app in wakelock detector last opened the screen? I see a bunch in the list and it appears it shows a time value minutes or seconds, and how many times it has done it ex. x200 or something like that. I don't see anywhere that shows how to tell exactly what app is doing it. I thought if I happened to see the phone do this I could look at wakelock detector immediately to see what app it was?

Wakelock detector is more of a log. Have a look at the screen trigger for usually high wake counts. If you're unsure, just post a screenshot and someone can help you.

If it comes to it, Samsung phones can be backed up using kies, there should be plenty of guides/threads/videos with instructions on how to do this.

I think I figured it out. I believe its an app called Tasker although I can't find where in tasker its programmed for a screen wake. Anyway, I appreciate all of your help and suggestions.

Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos (for backing up pictures/videos to the cloud)
Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup (doesn't require root)
MyBackup Pro: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro (there's a trial version)
Depending on what you want to backup you can take a look at these).

I'll take a look at these. I've tried Kies and it is very sluggish and no the greatest program. As much as I like Android, Apple made it very easy to backup and restore. It could be done with one process where Android it appears there is not an all in one program that you can back your entire phone up to.

Many of your apps will run in the background and update throughout the day and night. There are some apps that update only when the phone is awake, and will wake the phone if required. The easiest way to test this is to turn off your autosync. If that stops the phone from constantly waking, then look at the settings of your apps and try changing their update routines to not wake the phone. Some you probably won't be able to change. I'd probably start with the apps you added before the native apps.

It would be very strange if it's Tasker - by itself (ie just by being installed) Tasker doesn't do anything; it's just used to create "thingies" (like that technical description?) that perform actions based on triggers.

Anyway, I have very little experience with iOS (jailbreaking, apps testing), so I can't comment on its seamless backup/restore capabilities. You are correct that Android doesn't have an included backup/restore feature, so you have to rely on 3rd party apps. And frankly, if you backup and then restore, you're often back at square one because you restored your problem.

I find it much more efficient to backup my important data (contacts & calendar through Google; SMS & call logs through Helium; pictures/videos through Amazon Cloud Drive; desktop settings through Nova Launcher) and nuke the phone and start with a clean slate. YMMV.
