Screen protector on a broken screen

My phone screen (still perfectly responsive) has been smashed for a while, I have avoided using it completely and have been using a backup phone for months now, as the screen has bits of glass falling out.

I had a brainwave and thought of putting a screen protector over it. Would this work?
Should I go for ordinary plastic protectors or a more expensive tempered glass protector?

If the screen is still responsive a screen protector will also be responsive to touch.
Glass or plastic depends on what you want to spend...so that's more a personal preference.

Sorry, forgot to mention, purpose of this thread is: will it prevent the bits of screen falling out, and should I get a tempered/plastic protector to best deal with this

I used a plastic one on the broken screen of my Nexus 5, and it did stop bits of glass coming away. It looked bad though, since the surface was no longer completely flat, so after a while I removed it. I've made sure that all the bits that can come away, have, so I'm not leaving potentially injurious bits wherever I go.
