Just bought my Droid Maxx after coming from Galaxy Nexus (original droid before that!) - very proud of my transitions. ;-)

anyway.. i think my phone is working in solid order except a few times when using it last night for surfing or just trying different apps, the screen would turn off (lock mode) while i'm literally scrolling down a page.... even while my finger is touching the screen it turned off.. my screen timeout was set at 1 minute... after lots of tests and getting it to happen about 5 times accidentally.. i was able to figure out what triggers it... if i hold the top of my hand over the top edge of the screen (in alignment with speaker & camera) from anywhere above the surface up to about 3 inches i can get it to going into lock mode..

i've done lots of searches and many suggestions are to disable pocket detection... while thats not an option on 12.15.15/4.2.2 droid maxx...

any suggestions? should it be this sensitive? i mean its a huge problem while holding the phone in landscape mode.. it would left hand cradling top of phone, right hand cradling the bottom of phone, heck i should play riptide and see if it turns off while just driving in the game.. actually i just did another test... the phone will turn off even if just the top right or top left of the screen is close (but not touching my hand), if it touches, it drags down the notification bar..

Its called Pocket Mode (i think?) and its the most annoying thing on this phone. anything covering the sensor will turn the screen off/lock the phone to prevent **** dialing or random screen presses and there's really no way of turning it off.

I ended up just learning to not go anywhere near the top of the phone while I'm using it.

Mine goes blank when on side with volume button down. I think it's activating the proximity sensor

Yes. You can shut off the proximity sensor in settings (either in call, or Accessibility) but you may have issues with pocket dialing or cheek dialing on a call.

I tried to make my phone lock by placing my hand in various places on the screen. It didn't turn off either. I wonder if it has anything to do with the OS. My Droid Maxx is only 2 weeks old & immediately updated to KitKat. Could that be why? Another weird fact about my phone is that it only connects to the internet via my home wifi. I still have my old phone active, while I get used to and set up my new Maxx.

hey all,

thx for the replies.. i'm finding out it only occurs in contacts/phone dialer/home screens... watch these videos for examples, try it yourself to see if the same happens..

Yep...Dialer and home screens but not contacts for me. And not while browsing like was suggested earlier.

I wasn't able to make the phone turn off using directions others posted, but your videos were perfect. My 4.2.2 behaves in exactly the same way. Thanks for posting them!

Try Screebl beta simulate pro upgrade. Tinker around with the settings. I don't have this issue anymore.

I tried the home screen, the dialer, and contacts and used my entire hand to cover about two thirds of the screen in each mode. I ended up switching to some other apps from touching the screen, but the screen didn't go black. Maybe because I'm on KitKat, but maybe not. Good luck figuring this one out. I'll be back if it ever happens to me.
