Screen won't rotate at all

So any advice for those of us who have tried all these recommendations and still cant get the freaking screen to rotate?

Also, odin mode apparently doesnt exist on my phone. I held all three buttons to turn the phone on and it started up normal - twice.

If you have stock firmware then your phone supports both Recovery mode and Download mode (or ODIN mode if you prefer that name).

Both of those power on sequences are timing dependent, and if you can't figure it out you can buy a JIG online for a few dollars and that'll force Download mode every time.

The steps for Recovery mode and Download mode are almost identical - just use Volume Up for Recovery mode and Volume Down for download mode in the steps below:
With the phone completely off (pull the battery if you're not sure it's off, then reinsert the battery) press and hold the Volume Down rocker and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen. This'll put your phone in Download mode.

Thanks GSDer, I was finally able to find odin mode.

However, the screen still does not rotate.
I have had no problems with this phone for the last 6 months but now the screen is not rotating, it randomly freezes, and it seems like an eternity passes between the time I initiate a call and when the phone actually rings. Also, the past couple months I have been getting email and text notices stating that my data limit has been exceeded, yet I use my data less now than i ever have. Is my phone nearing the end? I can't believe that this expensive phone only has a seven month lifespan....

Well, I'm not sure what you were hoping to accomplish in ODIN mode - the only thing it's good for is to be able to reload the firmware on the phone.

But now that you know how to enter ODIN mode you can boot the phone into Recovery mode and try clearing the system cache. That might help.

Or you can use ODIN mode and the Kies software on your PC to reload the stock firmware. (Be sure to backup anything important before you start.)

Thanks again. Unfortunately it seems that no one knows how to fix the rotation problem. AT&T is telling me to send the phone in so they can diagnose it but that is simply not an option for me.
I took someone else's advice here and downloaded the app that allows you to manually rotate the screen but still the screen will not rotate. Its permanently stuck in the 'portrait' position.
This is my first "smart" phone and after six months I seriously miss my old "stupid" phone.
Thanks anyway for the help.

Sounds like the accelerometer is jacked up.

If you take a picture using the main camera, and switch between portrait and landscape orientation, does the camera perspective change to reflect that?

What happens when you navigate to Settings -> Accessibility and check 'Auto-rotate screen'? Does it stay checked? Does it also cause the quick toggle (drag down from the Status bar) to show that it's enabled? Does it also cause the same checkbox in Settings -> Display to get checked?

What about when you turn it off from the quick toggle - do the checkboxes get unchecked?

Have you done a Factory Reset?

Obviously I am not very tech savvy, but I am fairly certain that I have tried most if not all of the different methods of enabling and disabling and re-enabling the auto-rotate feature. The boxes stay checked and/or unchecked until I change that myself. I tested it in text messages, internet browser and photos and it would not display anything in the landscape position. The app I downloaded to manually rotate the screen shows a check in the box beside the landscape display option yet the screen remains in portrait. Same thing for the camera. Its as if the phone believes it is in landscape position when its really not.
I have not done a factory reset yet because I do not know how to do so. But if you think it might work, I am all ears.
I did the odin mode reset that was recommended by someone here and I also cleared the cache and rebooted as you advised me to the other day and neither fixed the problem. I saw another person here mention something about a gyroscopic censor? Anyway, I never found anything like that in any of the menus or settings. I guess I really have no choice but to send the phone back to AT&T but I absolutely need a phone right now so I may be stuck with this one as it is for a few months. Plus I hate being at AT&T's mercy.

I did the odin mode reset
I'm not familiar with that term. Did you have to go through the phone setup process (like when you first took it out of the box) when you were done with that?

I seem to remember that there was a way to recalibrate the accelerometer, but unfortunately Verizon has blocked that capability so I can't tell you where to look in the menus. Try looking in the Settings -> Display sub-menus, or search through the forums for accelerometer.

Ha! Looks like I mis-spoke - the setting is available on Verizon (4.1.2, MF1). Go to Settings -> Motion -> Sensitivity settings -> Gyroscope calibration

Everyone is talking about a whole bunch of steps that they took before they took their battery out and waited 30 seconds. All these steps are unnecessary. All you have to do is turn your settings > display > turn off Auto-Rotate screen then take the battery out, wait 30 seconds or so, turn your phone on, turn Auto-Rotate screen on, and it should work. I had this problem and read so many suggestions all of them different with one similarity, everyone takes their battery out and waits 30 seconds. That is the main step. Hope this helps some people.

I know this post is old but I just had yo make an account and tell you thanks for the trick..it worked..my note 3 would not rotate after a hard dropped with a otterbox cover
But with your instructions you made it work.

That's what the 'Thanks' button is for - be sure to go back and click that on the post that you quoted.

I know that this problem may be solved but for the new ones i have a good idea for them . i was also facing the same problems on my tablet but then i found a nice way to solve this problem.i downloaded this app known as Ultimate Rotation Control. Its a very nice app giving you full control of the rotation of your tablet/phone. Here are some of the characteristics of the app :

- Per application settings
- Two widgets and a status bar notification with shortcut buttons for easily changing your rotation preference
- Ability to create shortcuts to specific modes
- Optimized for Android 1.6 (Donut) all the way to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
- Can act as Tasker / Locale plugin to automate your screen orientation setting
Supported modes:
- Auto: normal automatic mode, not overriding app preferences
- Forced Auto: automatic mode, but overriding other app preferences!

Hello. I have a problem with my samsung note 10.1 :( The screen won't rotate anymore. Even if the settings is all set.. Somebody help, please?

What is 'odin' mode?
Odin (aka Download) mode is a configuration that prepares the device to have firmware downloaded to it. For the Samsung Galaxy S3 you use Volume Down + Home + Power (from a cold start) to boot into Odin mode.

thank you so much, this problem has been irritating me so much, to the point or smacking my phone on the side to get it to rotate, and i know that's not going to do anything but make the problem worse :D

Its very easy...
switch off the phone for a minute
Try to start the phone
whiles loading, hold the on/off key plus the up volume key and your home key
A pop up menu appears
later press on reset and you are done...
trust me it works 100000000%;);););)
message me for any android question
