I agree with 100%. It's especially difficult to deal with those types of employees when u have a time frame to work around. I almost always call customer support with att because they gey paid hourly and will do a lot to get ur business.

Seems that already happened. Your response was to throw a tantrum, which didn't achieve your goal either. All it did do is provide the manager with another story for his buddies about immature customers throwing hissy fits like they expect it'd cause them to change their mind. Surely you don't think you taught him a lesson or anything.
The mature response would have been to control your anger, remain firm and polite about what you wanted, and seeking a positive resolution. Maybe you still wouldn't succeed in store, but some chance of success far exceeds zero chance.
It shouldn't matter. The customer knew the policies and the manager disregarded it for his own personal benefit. If the customer acted irate they can be asked to leave. If a manager or employee lies such as that they can lose there job and hurt business fir that store. Have u heard the saying it takes one bad experience to lose 50 customers. Word of mouth spreads fast. There are certain stores I won't give my business to due to bad employees.
Either way how a person acts the manager was still not going to let him buy the phone.

Or, as another poster already stated, perhaps this particular store and the district it was in had specific instructions on whether they could sell new devices off contract a certain period of time after their launch. Things like that are often left to the discretion of the district managers, and different ones will enforce different policies. It is like that at any major retailer.
As for the OP; I am a manager at a retail store. You come at me like that, you will get nothing. Nada. Zilch. You're lucky you didn't get tossed off their property and told to never return. (Yes, I've had that done for a customer like you) You never gave him the opportunity to explain why he could not sell it to you, and given how you behaved you shouldn't be surprised you didn't get what you wanted.
If you want something, behave like a grownup. State what you want, do not curse or yell, and be respectful. If they still do not yield, then you can politely escalate. When you behave like you did, you will not get anywhere with either store management or district/regional management.
Actually I did let him give me a reason if you read the thread he lied to the phone rep that it was because im not the primary acct holder even though he denied me right from the start without running the account.
And I did get what I want. I got my phone and I got free unlimited texts for 6 months saving 180$ because of the moronic manager. So he not only lied to me and the att phone rep he cost the store money and the company h3 represents money

He did not lie to you. Based on your own story, he did not tell you that, he told the phone rep that. You did not give him the opportunity to actually give you a reason, which, as one of the other posters said, could have been that that stores district would not allow full price sales of certain phones.
I will also reiterate; in these situations, acting like a grown up and not throwing a temper tantrum goes a long way. Calling a manager moronic for not selling you something would be an example of that. Given your behavior, you're lucky you weren't escorted out of the store.

It shouldn't matter. I should be able to walk into any att corporate store and buy any phone outright. The phones sold are subsidized for a contract, not only meant for a contract. If a district store decides to change it's policies that att enforces because it represents att as corporate store it needs to be the same across the board. The manager is lucky he didn't get fired, the op could have sued for discrimination easily and won because he was a paying customer and the manager refused to serve him against policy for some unknown reason. Ppl sue for a lot less and win.

That isn't how it works. Your purchase is at Atts discretion. They could deny it for any reason except demographic ones. (E.g. Race, sex, etc)
No it doesn't. Retail corporations give district managers wide discretion when it comes to things like high demand product. If a district manager is seeing high demand for a device, they can tell their stores not to sell it unless a contract is attached.
Example: I work as a manager for a sporting goods retailer. I work in the Chicago market, and the Blackhawks won the Stanley cup a few weeks back. For that apparel, the three district managers in our market decided what the purchase limit was for the hats (which are always a hot seller), and based those decisions on the amount of stock each of their districts were getting. My districts was two; the district that covers the city allowed one. Our corporate office had no input on that, and they supported the DMs decisions completely.
Something tells me you haven't worked in retail. A manager wouldn't get fired over something like this. The manager would have gotten fired if he gave the OP the same attitude right back, but he didn't.
The OP also could not have sued for discrimination because there wasn't any. It is irrelevant that the OP was a paying customer, because the store has no obligation to sell him something. If stock was constrained so they limited sales to just contract customers, that is a legitimate and justifiable reason for not allowing the sale.
That is not the reason he gave. How don't you get it. He told me he can't sell me w phone outright because it is against"att policy to do so" which it clearly isn't. So tell me again how he didn't lie to me straight to my face

Perhaps it is against policy in his district or store region, as has been suggested a half dozen times. In retail, districts and regions will all have different policies but they will still be 'Att policies'. Since you reacted the way you did, he may not have had the opportunity to give you the full explanation. (Or, given the way you reacted, he didn't want to prolong the discussion any more than he had to)

Had I been the manager of this store I would have stopped all means of trying to work with this guy after he displayed what he claims he did. Most managers do. Give us the benefit of the doubt, be civil and most are willing to work with you if we can. Of course if we can't then we are discriminating and should be fired on the spot (lol) but give it a try anyway.

Didn't say that.. We just said you should just go through other means. Just because someone is a manager doesn't mean they are going to always do what's right..
Hence why online stores are better. It's black and white on the site and you have no human opinions or whatever getting in the way. Also again if you are also surprised a manager lied to you... You need to get out more.

Get out more lol. I'm not surprised but don't tell me I shouldve taken his lying. I was civil at first until he told me and the phone rep blatant lies while waking away so I don't hear what he's telling the phone rep.

Haha. You think that your free texts are costing AT&T? As management we have protocols we follow to appease unhappy customers and one of them is...DRUM ROLLL... FREE TEXTS for (insert time here) amount of time. If that is not good enough then we move on to something else before we direct the customer to customer relations. I LOVE your posts!

Text messages cost companies nothing. Just Google it. Plenty of articles out there that explain how they bank on text messaging plans since it barley uses any resources for SMS messages.
Want to know if they are wrong? They comp your bill. Comcast was wrong... I proved it to them (without cussing them out) and my bill went from 140$ this month to... $10.

Nice. But they comped me 180$ worth of my bill. Im not saying it costs att resources. But it is still almost 200$ att is out of because of this
