Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything about it by searching. And yes, I'm a noob to Android and smartphones in general.

Let's say I open Contacts and am presented with a long list of (clickable) names. Often, when I try to scroll down the list, I end up clicking and opening one of the contacts. Is there a technique or something I've missed? I don't want the clickable link to open, I just wanna scroll to get to the one I wanna open.

Thanks!

Touchscreen tip #1- Pause, ever so briefly when you touch the screen, before flicking to scroll down. Or do anything else for that matter. Treat it like a mouse that needs a fraction of a second on a click, instead of a "normal" mouse click.

It is not really that long of a pause once you get the hang of it, but if you are totally new to a touchscreen, it needs that moment to tell the difference between a "click" and "more is to come". Once you get the hang of it, you will stop thinking about it.

Also if you hold your finger at the very edge where the letters are. Then just move your finger up and down, the contact list will scroll and you will be able to get close to the name you want. Try to keep your finger off the contact names. This way it will not open to one you don't want.
