Hi guys

I've been looking around for a few days now for an app to encrypt my SD card but I've not found one that fits what I'm looking for, so I thought I would ask you guys to see if you know of one....lol

I was going to just use kitkats built in SD card encryption but I'm a but worried that something could go wrong with my phone and leave me with no way of getting to my files.

So what I need is an encryption app (probably a rooted one) that will:

1. Have good encryption.

2. Deactivate with the the lock screen so the SD card can be used in the phone as usual.

3. Be able to be decrypted from a PC should anything happen to my phone.

Is there anything out there or am I asking for too much?

Hello.

There is an app called Boxcryptor: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ails?id=com.boxcryptor.android&token=TscIOlTT

The way it works is that it creates a container, and anything you put in the container will be encrypted with AES-256 bit encryption. That way, you can still use the SD Card as usual. There is also a PC Client.

The other thing you can look into is AESCrypt: https://www.aescrypt.com/

It has an android application as well as a PC client. It will encrypt files as well.

Let me know what you think and if you have anymore questions.

Thanks for the reply ;)

Bixcryptor came up a few times while I was searching for an app but I thought it was just for zipping files up to be uploaded to a cloud?

Will these encrypters be unlocked with the phone lock (lock screen)?

For example if I encrypt the SD card and I have the camera app save to this SD card, will I be able too just fire up the camera app and start taking pictures or will I need to decrypt the SD card first.

You would have to take the pictures and then move the pictures into the container using the boxcryptor app. It will automatically be encrypted once you put it in the container.

Thanks again ;)

So i guess the only way to make it work without having to transfer the files would be to use the built in encryption and risk loosing everything should the phone stop working?

I've been looking at "SSE - Universal Encryption App" do you know if thats any good?

It's not that much work to transfer files to that folder. In fact, it's really easy. I would try out boxcryptor to see how it goes. As for SSE, I believe that individually encrypts a file, not in a folder like boxcryptor does.

I'm sure I read that it could encrypt folders. But then again if I was going to use that then I may as well use the built in one as I wouldn't be able to decrypt the sd car on a pc.

Another one I was looking at was Encryption Manager.

I meant If I used the built in encryption ;)

I don't know what it is but there's something about boxcrypter that just don't look right.

Have you tried Encryption Manager?

Thanks again

Not really. If you don't like boxcryptor, look into aescrypt and see if that fits your requirements.

I cant find aescrypt on the play store, do you mean Crypt4All ?

BTW... I don't mind paying for an app if its what I need ;)

Crypt4all is an app compatible with Aescrypt, which is a program on the PC.

A bit of an update........

I've been trying out a few apps and I've not found any that unlike :(

I couldnt find any reference to my external SD card with Boxcryptor. but to be honest I didn't like the feel of it anyway.

I skipped crypt4all because I'm not a fan of the developer so I tried SSE - universal encryption app, but the problem with this one is that i cand get it to show the folders I want to encrypt on my SD card.

Then I moved on to Encdroid but that wouldn't let me create a volume on my SD card and kept giving me an error saying something to do with "/".

I then tried Cryptonite and all seemed ok as it let me create a volume and could even see the folders on my SD card. The problem with this one was that it kept giving me errors when I tried to decrypt them.

Can anyone recommend any other apps ?

I'm not sure what else to recommend. You can try using SSE or another app you previously tried to encrypt the files and then transferring that encrypted file to the SD Card.

Thanks for all the help so far ;)

I actually don't know why I'm finding it so hard finding an app....lol

I've even resulted to looking at those vault type apps that let you add things like pictures, docs...etc but none of them say what type of encryption they use :(

I'm not sure what apps you are referring to, but most apps use AES 128-256 bit encryption. I know SSE has more encryption options like Blowfish.

I also found out SSE can encrypt entire folders as well.

A bit of an update.....

I've managed to get SSE to encrypt the files on my SD card. The problem was that clicking the SD card link at the top of the screen doesn't take you the the SD card. What I needed to do was click the root link and navigate to the SD card that way.

I'm still looking out for a better app as I'm finding the encrypt/decrypt process a bit slow and it seems that the way this app works is that you first encrypt a folder and then delete the original one, then whenever you need to access the encrypted folder you run the app and decrypt the folder. But this recreates the original folder but still keeps the encrypted one, so when your finished you just delete the decrypted folder as you still have it in encrypted form.

Now this is all well and good but its going to be a pain if I need to frequently add files to the encrypted folder.

What would be good is if it just asked for a pin/password on launching the app and once the app oped, all my files would be accessible (like some sort of vault).

If anyone knows of any apps then please let me know ;)

Also a bit off topic but.......

Does anyone know of a email app that requires a pin to open it and also encrypt the emails stored on the phone?

Boxcryptor can lock the app and use a pin to go in and out of an encrypted folder. I'll keep looking for other apps. As for encrypted emails, you're going to have to look at OpenPGP. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy

I did try boxcryptor but I couldn't get it to work :(

I've just been doing a bit of reading on on PGP and it seems a bit drastic for what I need...lol

All I need is the email app to be password protected (maybe I could just use an app locker for that) and for the app to encrypt the stored email files, or at least make them unreadable if someone plugged the phone into a PC and copied the files.

I don't need the emails themselves to be sent/received in an encrypted form.

Thanks again for your help so far ;)
