SD card for the G4

Mum wants the Moto G4 but what type of SD card will she need? Will any SD card do or will it only take certain ones?

When you put the card in, the phone should prompt you to format the card to work in that device. You should use a brand new blank card. Hope this works - I'm doing the same thing.

ETA: if it's a lower capacity card, it might not alert you to format the card. But as you get to the larger sized cards, you will probably need to format. You can probably format the card just by tapping yes on dialog prompts.

I just put in a 64 gb card and no prompt came on. I was hoping to format it to internal storage. Any suggestions????

Haha, I'm not sure. I'm trying to copy files to the card with no success, because the card doesn't make its own directory, like 1 instead of 0.

But anyway, I didn't get any prompts to format the card I don't think. It was simple plug and play, only I can't seem to copy files to it.

Figured it out. Heres the path. Settings>Storage>Tap your card storage>Upper right corner 3 dots(menu)>Settings. That gets you to the options.

Motorola support recommends UHS-1 type sd card -

'Performance warning
We recommend use of a high speed card , such as a UHS-1 type. Class 4 and Class 2 micro SD cards are not recommended for adopted internal storage usage. The performance of these cards is typically 10x slower than internal storage performance.
If your card it too slow, your device will warn your during the adoption process. If you encounter this dialog, we advise to upgrade your card to a UHS-1 card first.'

Think she's gonna use the SD card as portable storage like I'm doing on my Moto X Force. At least then you can take it out.

Yes, thanks. The last thing I did was copy files to a directory with my SD card part number as the name, and it worked. But I'm still not confident about it. Thanks again.

I have a 200 gb card in a Z Force, used as portable. The phone is 32 gb. I have used up half of it. If I find it getting used up I'll switch the card to internal.
This G4 is only 16 gb, I put a 64 gb card in it. I made it internal and quite a few apps transferred over. I can't imagine using more than 80 gb ever. I don't take photos much.

I have a sandisk 32gb UHS-1 card in my Moto G3, used as adoptable storage. The phone complained it was too slow, but since I needed the extra storage, I accepted it. It's working ok. Sometimes things get slow though.

I have a 64 GB sdxc card in my g4+ with no noticeable slowing of my phone. I can easily imagine running out of storage because everytime I used to think I was all set with plenty of storage, I still ran out of it.

I bought a 100 (close to 100, but a bit more - too cold to check at the moment) GB microSD too, but I was worried about the card drawing too much resources, so it's good to hear it works out well.
