SD card question...

Hey everyone. I'm sure there's a simple answer to this, but I just can't figure it out. Every time I plug in my Vivid via USB to my PC and use it as a disk drive (whether for pics or adding music), I have to power off and on my phone to get it to read the card again? For instance if I add music to my music folder, I eject the card from the computer, and my music app lists "no artists found". I can see the little symbol spinning, but nothing ever comes up. I'm coming over from a BlackBerry where I'd do the same thing, and you'd see the SD card scanning and eventually bringing up all of my music again. Is there a step I'm missing to get my phone to read the card after ejecting? Or maybe I'm just not waiting long enough for the phone to scan the card after being ejected from the PC?

Thanks in advance!

So when you unplug the phone you don't get a little message at the bottom of the screen saying "scanning SD card" ?

It does say that actually but if I go to my music player, it will say "no artists found". Up on top just below the notifications bar where it says "my library - artists", you'll see the spinning circle. I've got like over 2100 songs, so I'd like to think maybe I'm not waiting long enough for it to scan? I also read somewhere that maybe I have my SD card partitioned a little differently....

my music is here: SDCARD > Music. I'm wondering if it needs to be located somewhere different for the phone to read it correctly after USB use? Maybe SDCARD > Media > Music? I'm just guessing...

It shouldn't, if your app knows where to look. But SDCARD is not your removable micro card; it's the phone's memory. The micro card is SDCARD/EXT_SDCARD (SDCARD2).

I'm sorry.... Yeah, I labeled it wrong in my post. I'll try manually scanning it to see how long it takes.

After looking for rescan apps in Google Play, I saw that this is a common problem! Unfortunately, no one has been able to find an app to work with ICS. I tried SDrescan, Rescan Media, Rescan SD Card!, and Scan Media. It looks like I need to follow everyone else and just quickly power down and up after adding files to the SD card...

Is there a way to force a rescan within ICS?

I've never had this problem, but my phone defaults to power only from USB, which I manually switch to file mode (via slide-down notification tray), and I usually switch back y power-only mode before unplugging. Is this a problem even after you do this?

thanks for the tip! unfortunately, it didn't work. i still get the same annoying bug...

What happens if you just unplug the phone without ejecting it first? The only reason there's an option to "safely remove" a data device from a PC is to allow automation to be sure all files are completely closed and not open for editing - in this way, it prevents data corruption - so a simple copy/paste of music shouldn't cause any issues.

The other thoughts I have would be a reformat of the card (should be able to do this from the PC while the phone is plugged in) or to try a different card in your phone to see if the problem remains. If you format the card, back up all data first, and use FAT32 - it won't recognize the card if you use NTFS.

I had the same problem, but after I looked in the folder that had the music and went back to the music app...the library was listed.

Or, take it from someone that figured this out and what you do is kill the app with a task killer/manager, and if you don't have that, just go to Settings>Apps>All>Music and "Force Stop" the application. Then, just reopen the app and voil?, there it is! Trust me, I ran into this same issue time and time again.
