SD Storage

I thought Nougat had an option to encrypt external storage. My internal storage is somewhat protected, due to the pin requirement to access my phone.

How does one protect the removable storage?

If you set it as adoptable, it becomes encrypted. But then, only that device can read it. If you reset it, I think it still becomes unreadable.

I'm on Nougat and have that option, but it's in my security settings. Also note that I do not need to have it formatted as adoptable storage for it to be encrypted (which I thought was abandoned by Google anyway?).

Maybe a Samsung thing?

Thanks for the reply. I really don't want it to act like the internal storage.

As suggested, the option is in the Security settings. That beings on another question.

If I encrypt it and this phone dies, can that data ever be access with my replacement phone?

Sounds like it might be a catch 22 in using the encryption.

Glad I could help on the original question, but I have no idea on this one. I would *hope* that encrypting the card only keys the encryption to your password. That way, when you move it to another device or try to read it on your computer, you can still access it. But I could also see the encryption being keyed to the device it's encrypted on, similar to how formatting as adoptable storage would tie it to that specific phone.

If you don't get an answer here, I'd either try some Google-fu or call in to Kim Komando's or Leo LaPorte's weekend radio shows about computer tech. They would surely know.

As far as I know, encrypted storage will only work with the device that encrypted it.
