Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot Issue - SOLVED!

This is great, however it is only a temporary help for me. My DINC still reboots randomly (I.e. no particular "thing" makes it reboot) and it sometimes goes into the reboot loop like it did yesterday. I was unable to even get to reboot screen for a couple hours. I really loved this device for about 18 months until it started doing funky things. I am trying to make it last until mid April to use my full update discount, but it's getting more difficult. I have done factory reset about 8 times since early December, and I have used this method to get the device to function again a few times plus just a regular reboot when it will work probably 30x. Regular reboot doesn't always work. It is really unacceptable for this device to fail so badly in less than two years. I have very few apps. My favorite thing about this device is the maps navigation. I can't use that at all anymore - instant failure. Now the maps directions even seems to make it shut down now. I might as well have a flip phone. This phone is no longer smart. I'm afraid I will be going over to the iPhone side ASAFP. :-X

Does your phone seem to get hot as well when it goes reboot crazy? My dinc had that issue sometimes out of the blue it would reboot over and over. You can try a factory reset but I doubt thats going to fix it, sometimes things just break, when mine had the issue vzw sent me a replacement but that was months ago since then no problems with the replacement phone.

Can't say this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.

  1. Boot into recovery
    • Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option
    • When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power
  2. When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
  3. Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
  4. When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
  5. Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
  6. Select "Reboot system now"

You can now wait for the update to show up again, or try one of the methods in the post: For those who want the second GB update/patch to get the update again. It should reboot this time. Beware, it will stay at the Droid Eye screen after reboot for a while (~5 mins), but eventually, it did get installed. Be sure to make a lot of space for it though... ;)

For those of you that were starting off with Droid version 2.2 like I was and couldn't figure out why the update to 2.3.4 wouldn't work...I have the reason!!!!!

Well, for me, the update would download to my phone, then the phone would say it was going to reboot, but it never would. ****SOLUTION***** - plug your phone into your computer, select it as disk drive, go to "my computer", find your SD card, right click and go to properties, go to format and if your SD card is in "FAT" format, you need to format it to "FAT32"...but by doing so you lose all your info on that card, so be sure to copy all of it to a folder on your computer before reformatting.

After that, remove your phone from your computer, get your phone to start downloading the update again, mess with the date of your phone if you have to....and WHALLA...it'll work.

HI:

I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but when i hold the power button down, i do not see a "reboot" option. Am i doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I became a member just to thank you others for your help... especially Giskard! Thanks as well to flmangll on incredibleforum.com for posting a link there to this thread.

It took a while to work through the advice in this thread and get it to work for me (I'm not really techy, my phone is not rooted...) but this worked:

1. following Giskard's advice about rebooting in recovery & wiping cache partition (first post in thread)
2. uninstalling space hogs (Adobe Flash Player, Google Maps, Facebook, Adobe Reader etc) until the update got past loading and my phone actually restarted. The suggestion about changing the date helped too with getting my phone to re-load the update.

I kept repeating everything in step 2 until the update finally went through (got past the grey candystripe bar and actually freaking restarted).

Time will tell if this solves the "out of memory" warning that I kept getting more and more often but I feel a lot better about that than just replacing my phone under insurance like the nice, helpful person at Verizon suggested! (Really?!?!)

"Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option"

On my Incredible, when I press and hold the power button, I do not have the "restart" option. I only have Power Off, Silent Mode, Vibration Mode, Airplane Mode, and Mobile Network.

Any suggestions for me? I am so frustrated that every time I try to download the Gingerbread upgrade, my system freezes on "rebooting now".

I had to do several things to go from 2.2 to the latest update for my Incredible 2.

1. Formatted the SD card from FAT to FAT32
2. Shut down phone, upon turning back on held down the "Volume down and power buttons" and then followed the steps given in this thread.

It is worth noting I deleted several large applications and moved all of my data from my phone onto my PC before attempting to download the latest software update before moving my data back to the phone. This should resolve a lot of the issues people with Android 2.2 are seeing when trying to update. Remember when you don't have the "Restart" button because you have 2.2 just shut down, and upon turning the phone back on hold the buttons down as described as if you were following the steps from restarting.

I've done this twice now and still no fix. Mine has been stuck on the download screen of the 4.08 update for hours and this is probably the 5th time in weeks that it's done this. To clear the low phone storage notice I clear my facebook data and it goes away, then I try and install the update and it locks up. Any ideas? I'm about to just get a new phone and stay the heck away from android all together.

To clear the phone storage low message, just clear the data for your facebook app and the warning goes away. It's a quick fix, but it really helps.

The volume down button on my Droid Incred is broken, so i cannot use that as a method to boot into recovery. My problem is the same as described, where the update is downloaded but my phone refuses to reboot itself after installation. Is there another way around using the volume button?

It worked for me, but it wiped over 1000 pictures that weren't stored on the memory card in the process. My last stored picture is now from next month... of last year. My memory card doesn't have enough capacity to store all of my pictures. It's only a 1GB card. I would have backed them up first but I can't figure out how to sync my phone with my macbook.

I followed these directions and am so happy that my phone restarted correctly. Thank you SO MUCH for your post! I honestly thought I might need to purchase a new phone and start from scratch! You're a life-saver!!

Alright, i have read a good majority of this thread but now i need help.

Yesterday (June 22) i got a notification about downloading the new update from Verizon wireless for my Dinc.2
I accepted it for s and giggles and my phone kept freezing. So i kept taking out the battery and rebooting several times when clearly the update didnt want to download.
SO i put in in airplane mode to stop it and finally ti did. Through out the day my phone was working fine.
After work i decided to try this all over again knowing i had time.
But now, i tried to download it again, it froze again, and said error connecting to server. i rebooted the phone and was looping in the droids EYE boot thing...
I did the clear cache thing and now it wont even pass the White HTC screen. and when i try to clear the cache again. then screen goes black and now im stuck. it will not reboot

I have not rooted this at all or anything like that. Im using this with stock software.
What can I do without doing a factory reset???
Im pissed off. Verizon is so stupid sometimes!
They ed up my phone. and i do NOT want a ty referb phone

Sounds like you do not have sufficient memory to download the update. I think a reset is what is going to get you out of this.

Love it! This totally worked for me! Changed my date to around the time that the update started trying to install and wouldn't and it absolutely worked! Finally after so many months of frustration!! Ur amazing!!

Once again I would like to thank the original poster. I had to use this technique again for the latest software update. Can't wait for the iPhone 5, and all of this nonsense is over for me. Goodbye HTC and Android. It was at times a fun ride, but at others beyond frustrating. I should thank VZW and HTC for delaying the Dinc 4G LTE. I would have pulled the trigger in March and it probably would have been a big mistake.

Tried this technique but now my screen is stuck on the red triangle with exclamation mark ...Help !! How do I make my phone work again ?

Any way to perform this cache clearing without using the power button? Can you access it while wired to the hard disc from a computer? My Incredible's power button hasn't worked for a couple of weeks, and I haven't been able to get this update to install for a very long time (though didn't manage to try this method).

Thank you so much! Easy to follow and everything seems to be working fine. Thank you again.
