Security concern with keyboard app

Hi Everyone. I just downloaded a keyboard (jbak) from the play store that had lots of downloads and lots of good reviews but one day after I installed it I recieved a wierd text. SMiShing may be prevalent but in 7 years I've never recieved one. I deleted the text ( maybe too quickly) and uninstalled the app which is too bad because I liked it. I know the danger in third party keyboards but wondered if anyone has had a similar experience.
