security patch?

I'm looking at recommending this phone for a friend that has a dying note 4. Obviously, he's not one to upgrade every year.
I'm not as concerned about platform updates, but I am concerned about making sure he would get security patches in a semi reasonable timeframe. Can anyone who's had the phone for a while let me know what you're seeing as far as update frequency, and what the current patch level is?

It just became available USA last month and has 7.0.

Galaxy S7s are slow getting N. A lot depends on your carrier with many.

I tried four other brands just last year. This is first phone in 5 yrs that I truly love.

Blackberry promised monthly security updates or more as needed. Not happening, not my phone.

Apple is noted for pushing updates out to everyone and keeping current. Big investment too.

For US$599 the Mate 9 skin fits the bill and EMUI 5 is nicest. I do not like Samsung bloat or TouchWiz or its Android build either.n
