security updates slow

I have had the pixel 6 for a few months now. This is my third security update. For some reason it takes a very long time for it to download. Not sure why. My phone is connected to Wi-Fi. I have 200 up and 200 down so I do not understand what the problem is or why it is taking this long. I have been downloading the latest update for over an hour. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It's always been slow, no matter what size file it is. Usually around an hour from download to reboot.

A lot of folks are hitting the servers all at the same time. Of course it's slow.

Expected behavior I've been experiencing this with all the latest pixel phones. 3a, 4xl, 5 and now the 6 it's not just the 6. Currently, Google downloads and optimized the apps then reboots, where in the past after the reboot it would take a long time optimizing apps. Now all the magic happens before the reboot so you can still continue to use the phone.

There was an actual announcement back then when this changed.

It's app indexing that takes so long.

The problem is with us being tech nerds. You're not supposed to "seek" the update and stare at it impatiently on day 1, it's designed to download and install in the background and give a notification to reboot when it's finished.

It's a lot faster on, say, a Samsung phone. But the device is unusable while it does it... The Pixel way is a far better and more elegant solution.

Nah I'd rather the Samsung method. Downloads and installs the update in 5-10 minutes and it's done. It's taking over an hour for this update to download and install and when you restart the phone, it sits on the load screen with the 'G' while it's preparing the phone.

I want to download and install an update as quick as possible. It takes over an hour to do that on the Pixel, takes less than 10 minutes on a Galaxy. And if you really don't want to wait the 10 minutes, you can schedule it to install at night.

This A/B partitions not what its crack up to be lol
Ill take Samsung way also.

I honestly can careless it's not like an extra 20/40 mins makes a difference since I can still use my device. I mean I waited a month for the update j can wait 20/40 additional mins.

In theory it's great. Downloads/installs an update in the background and when it's done, it comes up with a message to restart the phone, you restart it and it's done. In practice, it's an extremely long and drawn out process. Especially when an update comes with new features you want to try or critical bug fixes you've been waiting for, then the A/B partitioning isn't ideal.

I'd rather get it done and dusted in 10 minutes than have it drag out for over an hour for a 23mb update...

I agree
My fold 3 update today 10 minutes start to finish, my Pixel 6pro almost a hour

As I say, it is frustrating for us nerds who actively seek an update, but for normal folk it's a much better solution.

Updating my S21 ultra definitely does NOT take under ten minutes!

Guess everyone has what way they like .

Not really worried Security, I want Google to fix the connection issues.

On phones that don't have dual A/B partitions (i.e., Samsung), after the update is done and the phone has restarted, does it take a while to optimize apps? If so, that might explain the discrepancy. The Pixel is probably optimizing apps during the update process, but before the restart (since it has the dual partitions).

Yeah it optimize without A/B but whatever Samsung did it fast in years past it took some time but 10 minutes done maybe 15 tops but not more then that

The app optimisation is part of the install process.

Upgrading to Android 12 on my S21 Ultra took 10 minutes for a 1gb+ file. Took my Pixel 6 Pro over an hour to install a 23mb February security patch.

I know which one I'd prefer.

Certainly is a slow process if you are seeking instant gratification. I let it do its thing and it lets me know it is ready to reboot. A watched pot never boils. First world problems.

I don't really have a preference vs. the Samsung method just so I receive an update.

Yeah, I don't see this as a major problem, since it's all done in the background anyway.
