Sending, receiving and replying to group text messages

I know there are several threads on here dealing with this. I'm posting a new one, because the solutions in the other ones are to download handcent or goSMS and supposedly that should solve all of the group messaging needs. Neither seems to solve the problem for me. I will use any app if it works. I would even pay for an app to make this work. Being able to reply and send group messages is a major convenience. Not being able to do it is so confusing.

So here is the situation. The stock app called "Messaging" offered by Samsung cannot handle group messaging. I could not even send a group message, it would send each person an individual message. Then I downloaded the At&t app called "Messages." This allows me to send a message to multiple people. And also receive them. And it stayed grouped together. But then it just sort of stopped working. I don't know what changed. Now if I send a group message and someone replies, the message comes in just from the person who replied, it does not get grouped with the original message I sent to multiple people, even if they reply to all.

I have since downloaded goSMS and handcent SMS and neither of them seem to fix the problem. With both of them, I can send a group message, but the reply comes in as a single person. I have noticed that the act of having goSMS installed on the phone, allows the stock samsung app "Messaging" to actually send a group message, rather than multiple individual ones. But again, replies are not grouped with the original message thread.

This is so frustrating. So right now, I have 4 messaging apps on my brand new state of art phone and none of them can handle receiving and replying to group messages. There must be something I am doing wrong?

Ah. I now know why the At&t app stopped working. I totally missed that when I am sending a group message, I need to check the allow reply to all. I had done it once before and it became the default, but then for some reason it wasn't default anymore. This might fix that app at least. Although, aesthetically, it's not much, but if it works I don't care.

Kind of crazy this is a problem.

I just switched to the S3 from iPhone a couple days ago and this messaging issue is a huge negative for me. Have you figured out any other way to do it?

Hello gravity homer. Thank you for posting this thread. How have you been able to manage the group texting since you posted this thread? I have galaxy nexus and need to group text. Thank you.

I, too, am on the hunt for an app that sends out to the group as a whole, but can't seem to find one that does just that. i have handcent installed but it takes days (if even then) for it to send out to a group of people...usually i just delete the message and send it individually. What a waste of my time!! Have you found any solutions or an app that handles this? Please inform us! Thanks

I prefer go sms if I have to choose and
It does work if you have the option selected to group messages. I have tried all apps because I came from iphone in November. I would love to have something not so clunky though
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Android Central Forums

I'm in a simular position but i dont mind if text replies come back wherever!
All I want to do is send 1 message to 54 people at a time.

Just recieved a samsung galaxy s3 and was told "yes it does group texts" and even after me telling the blike I text 50+ people at a time.
I was using HTC sensation and even though android managed to send more than 100 texts an hour.

Ive downloaded handcent but cant ammend the group, group sms but have to pay to create a group ( havent done yet as loads say doesnt work) and go sms pro which i cant get to create a group. I did get to a page asking me to purchase but doesnt say how much????

help me please?????

I set up my Nexus 4 on T-Mobile's $30 100 minute, unlimited text and data plan yesterday and had the same problem. Everything worked except receiving texts. Today, like magic, it works. I have not tried a group sms yet but I will give that a shot soon and see what happens.

I can relate but I am more interested in sending one text. Where the IPhones will know know the other people I send my message to. I would like send one text to 50 people and they will not know I send a group email. How do I turn off that so that my friends will not know I send a group text? Is there an option that I can select some character and the Message will not keep it as one thread on the other phones. Something like BCC or like that.

For anyone who is confused about the group messaging conversations in one thread: If you have AT&T you should by default have an app already on it called att messenger. open it, go through the simple setup, and then you will have one place where all your text/calls/voicemails will be stored and organized. Conveniently the texting in this app allows you to add as many people as you wish and then before you send at the bottom theres a "reply to all" box, check that and you will be able to have group texts with iphone and blackberry users with all the texts in one "thread". then go to the android messaging app and turn off all notifications.

I work for T-Mobile. I have both the s2 and the Nexus and let me tell you, neither will allow me to do the group texting. Well, I can send out the same text to the group but will receive the replies individually. Which is completely and utterly frustrating. I do not want to download an app as a solution considering that the messaging feature from factory should come with that capability by default.

On another note, if you have the Nexus4 I suggest doing more research on doing calls over wi-fi. I recently got the phone so I don't know all the pros and cons, but it was brought to my attention this phone is unable to make calls over wi-fi. Keep me in the loop!
:p

Hi, Halana Jones,
You said:

So I went to "Samsung Aps", updated them, restarted my phone. Where do I go next to find PowWow????
Thanks

The android phone (galaxy) comes with the AT&T app for messaging. Set it up and recieve all group messages on it, as well as sending. Works fine.

I have a Galaxy S3 . I couldn't send a group text to more than 10 people. I tried several apps to overcome this. The only one that worked was SMS Monkey.Very easy to use.

You have probably solved this by now. But the app SMS Monkey works really well on my S3. Very easy to use . Sent a text to 21 people I'm sure it will do more.
