Sending videos over SMS

I use the stock SMS app and whenever I text a video to a friend the quality is horrible. Am I doing something wrong here? I can send over Facebook messenger no problem, but texting it just decreases size I guess and thus decreases the quality

A text message can only be so big, so the file is being shrunk so it can still be sent.

Because videos can't be sent via SMS. They are sent via MMS, on which carriers put a data size limit. IPhones send it via iMessage, which is neither SMS nor MMS, but works exactly like Facebook Messenger or Hangouts.

You'll find sending them via the likes of Facebook Messenger, Hangouts and WhatsApp will also decrease the quality. Not as much as an SMS, but it still does. You're probably best emailing it, or uploading it to something like Dropbox and then sending a link.
